Newcastle beachgoers on Tuesday morning were greeted by the strange sight of 40 people dressed in Donald Trump masks and suits rolling off plastic chairs and into the surf.

The group of doppelgangers was led to the fake press conference on Nobby's Beach by one of the Trumps carrying a combined US/Australia flag.

One of the impersonators then wiped the phrase "Paris agreement, we the parties blah blah blah" from the sand, before the entire group marched into the waves.

The stunt was organised and filmed by the TrumpMyTrump group to coincide with US Independence Day celebrations on July 4.

Jason Freddi, a Melbourne-based artist who organised the event, said he hoped it would prompt people to outdo each other with their own satirical videos dressed as the US President.

"That's the idea - here's my Trump ... I want you and anybody else now to come and trump my Trump, with your Trump," he said.

"I put 40 of them on the stage, let's see if someone can put 100 of them somewhere."

The stunt took place during the Students of Sustainability conference, an annual event of the Australian Student Environment Network which was held in Newcastle over the weekend.
