(7,768 posts)I played in a high school band, I know all the notes even now. As a kid, playing patriotic music, (all the Sousa stuff), would give me chills. This was like a brutal kick in the gut.

(11,866 posts)small world, I was drum majorette in my senior year and also have been around a lot of patriotic music and patriotic parades.
It is not just patriotic music that sets me off though. Lately, I even burst out crying for no reason during a favorite old movie, remembering when hubby and I went ot see it. For me it is the nostalgia of when things were good and my life was happier.
It has been a brutal eight years for us, since the 2008 crash and The election of Dump is just the limit.

(7,768 posts)I'll never forget marching in my first parade down Riverside Avenue in Spokane, WA.
We wore white V-neck sweaters with the school emblem on the front and black skirts and slacks. People lining the sidewalks were cheering and clapping. Feeling so proud and praying I hit all the notes correctly.
And now it's come to THIS! It feels like this traitorous cretin has DESECRATED everything I hold near and dear.

What does 45 have to offer that Macron and/or France wants?
This is beyond me.

(505 posts)Maybe he's trying to strengthen France's influence internationally? Having someone else (in addition to Merkel) to represent EU interests is a good thing IMO. Though it could lead to conflicts between Merkel und Macron, obviously. I'm simply not happy that Merkel sometimes appears to be the de-facto leader of the EU on the international stage. While I can elect the German chancellor, many European citizens can't. Maybe Macron wants to make it clear that the EU is more than just Germany.
Ultimately, the EU should merge into a single power. Until that is completed, we can't ignore everyone who's not the German chancellor.

(101 posts)My first reaction was : why invite him ?
There were US Troops scheduled for the parade to commemorate the American entry into World War I in 1917 which was perfect.
On second thought, if, for the price of a dinner at Eiffel tower and a seat at the July 14th parade we can get along with him during the next four years then so be it.
Who knows, he may even tell his friend Jim that finally Paris is still Paris
The fact is that he's the president of the most powerful country in the world.
Our countries are friends and allies for centuries and we need everyday cooperation. We'll cope with four years of trump. I'll just miss President Obama much more.
