Plus they are ignorant, so they don't realize that hate is often wrong.

3. Because, for over a generation, they have willingly embraced evil...

...a step at a time. Winking at treason? 1968. 1980. Iran-Contra. Then--Gingrich's "Contract With America". Impeachment over a blow job. The 2000 "election". The invasion of Iraq. Torture. The launching of, and embracing of, Fox "news". The total nihilism and cynicism of the Obama era. The Tea Party. The open embrace of racism, and voter suppression. And above all, their deal with the devil in nominating Donald Trump. The descent into Hell has been a step at a time, and inexorable. There is little left to the descent, they have travelled so far. It's only a matter of time until they openly embark on a plan to turn America into a one-party state, a radical Christian theocracy combined with a plutocracy. And evil will have triumphed completely in this country. Such, at least, is the plan. Whether it succeeds is still up to us.

4. Partly prejudice, partly the propaganda they have been exposed to, partly fear and hate - they fear

fear and hate "socialism," "the liberal media," "the Clintons," and Obama so much that they are willing to accept any alternative. They don't accept that anyone will lose healthcare. They don't accept that anyone is currently losing healthcare in states with Republican governors. They don't accept climate change. They don't accept that anyone will be worse off by cutting safety net programs.

Some are racist and bigots. Some are callous and have no empathy. Some are greedy bastards who can't stand anyone getting something they don't get. Some are bitter about their lot in life and want someone to blame. There is no denying they hateful assholes!

12. Varied reasons.

I think that the people who have responded before me have done a good job of discussing many of the possible reasons that Republicans appear evil. There is no one reason, but a number of factors contribute to their callousness regarding the poor and their apparent vindictiveness.

Religion is one of the factors. Many Republicans tend to use religion not as a tool for self improvement, but as a method of judging the actions of others. They seem to be more interested in upholding some sort of "moral order" than in advancing the welfare of others. There are a number of Protestant denominations and a strain within Catholicism (as seen by Benedict, the last pope) that promote a punitive interpretation of human behavior. If you are suffering it is because you are not holy, and thus, you deserve it.

Authoritarianism: Studies have shown that Republicans/conservatives tend to value order and authority at greater levels than progressives/Democratic voters. This could be influenced by religion, as discussed above, but the fact is that when you put your trust in authority, you are more likely to be swayed to act in ways that the authority figure deems appropriate, even if their actions conflict with personal values.

Fear: Republicans seem to be motivated by fear. I mean we are all motivated to some degree by fear, but Republicans seem to have a more negative mindset where they are seeking to allay fear with stability. These factors blend together. Fear creates discomfort which Republicans attempt to assuage by seeking out authority. Religion offers a level of authority and a code of behaviors that may simplify life and reduce anxiety.

Republicans in this mindset are subject to see people who do not share the values as "other" and as such, unworthy of those things which make life livable. They use religion to justify their punitive views and their vindictiveness.

13. I'm thinking of my stepmother. She has no empathy. If she hasn't experienced something,

it doesn't exist or it isn't relevant. If someone is in pain that she herself hasn't experienced, then they just need to buck up and deal with it. If someone is depressed, then they are just feeling sorry for themselves. If someone is down on their luck, then they aren't working hard enough.

She simply has no concern for people who are in pain or who experience hardship if she, herself, hasn't been there. It's not real to her. Personally, I think she is a cold-hearted bitch. I think that is pretty much true for most of these people. They are cold-hearted assholes and they just don't care about anything or anybody but themselves.

The "Christians" from the right seem to have forgotten all about that sentiment.
