Or he wouldn't be asking this.

Prosecutors don't ask defendants questions to which they don't already know the answers.

This is designed to either get:

1) The Trump people to destroy stuff that makes them look guilty,
stuff which Mueller already has.

2) The Trump people to hold on to and produce even more stuff that makes them look worse.

Hadn't thought of that, but hell yeah! I sure hope Trump has misundersestimated Mueller like all those suave baddies used to do with Columbo!

When you get to the point of expecting litigation, you send a document preservation letter. That is a very routine practice. It is intended to preserve evidence - or impose consequences if the evidence isn't preserved.

If an entity has a document retention policy that calls for documents to be retained for 1 month and then destroyed, for example, the entity can legally continue to routinely destroy all documents over one month old without consequences, even if it knows it is under investigation, until you get a document preservation letter. If it destroys anything identified in the document after it receives the letter, you are presumed to have been doing so for the purpose of destroying evidence. If it has intentionally destroyed evidence, the missing evidence is presumed to have contained material adverse to the entity's interests.

DT and company is as crooked as they come. They will not do that. I bet they already destroyed said evidence long ago.

I'm sure they fired up the burn barrel as soon as Junior's emails became public.
