They did it when they weren't of the President's party. That's kosher.
One chamber forced the other to hold pro forma meetings. Because apparently one of the houses has to ask the other permission to adjourn. Think of it as congressional arcana. I'm not sure the majority in the house so hobbled wanted to acknowledge that requirement, but the minority couldn't do it on its own.
Details matter.

only the majority leader, mc connel gets to decide the calendar of the senate including when its in recess.

I can see maybe doing that to fill administration positions, but not for court appointments. That would fill the bench for a limited time, only to have to start all over (perhaps without a Republican Senate).
