Washington, D.C. U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) released the following statement today on voting no on the so-called skinny repeal of Obamacare:
From the beginning, I have believed that Obamacare should be repealed and replaced with a solution that increases competition, lowers costs, and improves care for the American people. The so-called skinny repeal amendment the Senate voted on today would not accomplish those goals. While the amendment would have repealed some of Obamacares most burdensome regulations, it offered no replacement to actually reform our health care system and deliver affordable, quality health care to our citizens. The Speaker's statement that the House would be willing to go to conference does not ease my concern that this shell of a bill could be taken up and passed at any time.
Ive stated time and time again that one of the major failures of Obamacare was that it was rammed through Congress by Democrats on a strict-party line basis without a single Republican vote. We should not make the mistakes of the past that has led to Obamacares collapse, including in my home state of Arizona where premiums are skyrocketing and health care providers are fleeing the marketplace. We must now return to the correct way of legislating and send the bill back to committee, hold hearings, receive input from both sides of aisle, heed the recommendations of nations governors, and produce a bill that finally delivers affordable health care for the American people. We must do the hard work our citizens expect of us and deserve.

And that replacement would be Medicare for All.
Otherwise, there is no plan other than the ACA that can come close to what McCain describes.

(11,738 posts)His statement is partisan disguised in a call for bipartisanship. The ACA is a Republican bill that President Obama tweaked to bring Democrats aboard, that was debated, and which Republicans added over 100 amendments to. Republicans were invited to discuss the bill and President Obama even had a Q&A specifically with Republicans to allow them to discuss the legislation with him. They ended up voting no because they were afraid of getting challenged in primaries by Tea Party candidates funded heavily by the Koch brother groups like Freedom Works and Tea Party Express. McCain took personal revenge on Trump today for the insults to him during the primary. That is all.
Republicans have no room to write legislation that will cover more people for less money, and offer better service. Their call for "competition" to lower rates is ridiculous and hollow when a handful of insurers (Kaiser, Anthem, Aetna, and Humana) have a large majority of the market share across the nation. Competition requires that there be a great number of competitors with semi equal power that offer innovation and efficiency in order to attract customers.
