(35,356 posts)The implication bites you on the butt.
There are 33 (R) governors. There are 32 states with (R)-controlled legislatures.
That would mean this wonderful idea many would support pretty much entails that they'd be fine with either 66 or 64 (R) Senators.
It's harder to take something away than it is to not be given something--it's harder psychologically and feels more abusive. What works with Medicaid expansion is the same as with every single tax break and benefit. It's the same with "white privilege" and it's why case law says that "Latino" doesn't include Brazilian--the result of the case was to keep affirmative action benefits restricted to those from Spanish-speaking countries. Wetlands issues are problematic because landowners have rights when they buy the property only to find that they're taken away later.

(35,356 posts)This was in the '80s. "Un-American" is a dismissive insult that basically says Americans must all believe the same thing. It's just a question of who gets to dictate the norms.
In the '60s it was conservatives. Vietnam War protestors were un-American. Agreed? Probably not.
Those protesting Nixon were un-American. Agreed? Probably not.
Those who opposed Obama were un-American? Agreed? Probably.
Because nobody likes being told that they're wrong. America is inclusive; it includes a huge variety of opinions, beliefs, values, views. Sikhs are no more un-American than Socialists or John Birchers or any number of other non-violent groups. Prohibition was fully "American"; being pro-slavery was fully "American." So was being anti-Prohibition and Abolitionist. Mixing church and state was American, just not imposed from above: Abolitionism was largely founded in a religious belief system (as was, late in the game, justification for slavery).
The one who taught me this was a Jewish Russian naturalized immigrant, who said that when he heard "un-American" he thought "anti-Soviet" and "anti-Russian"--terms for which there were very good definitions. Except that the definitions changed depending on what was politically correct. The Party decides on a new policy or political course, suddenly everything has to be in accord with it, and the definition of "anti-sovetskii" would change accordingly.
From his view, those using "un-American" were quite Russian at heart and Soviet in thinking.

(804 posts)Had a post up about this coming out of a recent ALEC meeting. Does anyone recall that?
I was hoping when I read it that it that it was untrue, but looks like this is where the Rs are going to try to go next in their quest to remove our rights to vote for our legislators.

(101,361 posts)but a legislature, with the influence of money on elections which that entails. It's far easier to buy a legislature than an electorate, especially with the Citizens United ruling.
Elections are a bit like marrying your cousin - each level it's done at, the likelihood of defects increases. It's better to go back to the general population as much as you can.

(804 posts)I rarely support amending the Constitution, but I think we have to in this case if we want to save our country.

(4,532 posts)The 10th amendment affords the powers not given to the fed Government to the states AND/or to the people(What better way is there to give power to the people than to vote for their senators?)
