Opinion: Trump’s time—and political capital—is quickly running out

Published: July 28, 2017 9:34 a.m. ET

By Paul Brandus

The Trump White House is mad at us (White House reporters) because we haven’t spent any time reporting on President Trump’s legislative accomplishments, to which I reply, “What legislative accomplishments?” Like healthcare? And they think we should cover his tax plans and infrastructure plans. To which I reply: “What plans?”

Here we are, more than six months in and Trump—who conned his believers into thinking everything would be a cakewalk—has no major legislative achievement he can point to. Nothing. Trumpsters think he’s busy, busy, busy they confuse activity and bluster with actual accomplishment.

Here’s the reality: This president is a lazy old man who golfs, watches TV and tweets. That’s about all. He barely lifted a finger on healthcare. No town halls, no speeches, nothing. On taxes, Trump unveiled what he called his “tax plan” back in April. It took up less than a page and had a couple of bullet points. It was really just the equivalent of a few tweets. No substance, no detail. For example, on taxes, he hasn’t said what income thresholds will be for the brackets he wants (10%, 25% and 35%); he hasn’t specified what tax breaks should be kept and what shouldn’t; he hasn’t detailed what he would do tax-wise for businesses. Various people in the administration have spoken of various things, but again—no specific, formal proposals yet. As Trump likes to say: Sad!

You're fired.

No one, not even a self-involved misfit, can know it all. No matter how big the orange is inside that skull.

No self-respecting individual would work for such a loser, unless they have the same loser genes.

Interbreeding? Perhaps. Maybe just the constant drip of evolution. Some bubble up from the swamp but they can't really survive in the light. Takes a while but soon his variety of swamp gas will dissipate.

He presented the public with a carnival barker sales job which too many of them bought.

Clinton, like Obama, can talk for hours about all policy minutiae. 45 cannot even fill a 140 character tweet with his policy knowledge.

Even after Reagan, Shrub, and Dolt45, you still have to acknowledge that Buchanan let a Civil War begin on his watch. We sometimes use "civil war" in a metaphorical sense, but when you add the capital letters it means 600,000 corpses.

That there were many journalists who had covered dump for decades in NY--including David Cay Johnston--who went on the record detailing his complete and utter lack of suitability for the presidency. Those folks got short shrift while the teevee mavens provided dump with billions in free coverage.

Nevertheless, anyone who was paying attention foresaw this disaster. Only the morans and brainwashed faux believers bought into the con.

Fri Jul 28, 2017, 12:55 PM

If you'll indulge me, I'd advise taking your brother-in-law's calls. Remind him that governing is one of those jobs (like being a teacher) that a lot of people think they can do, but that's not necessarily true. You've got to have some experience, some expertise, and you've got to know how things work together.

His hero not only didn't have any experience or expertise, he didn't know how much he didn't know. There's no crime in that. The presidency is a big, big job. Tell your brother-in-law that Trump is now failing him by stubbornly clinging to his inexperience. He's not reaching out to anyone, and he is dooming himself.

For now, help your brother-in-law to see that Trump is in over his head, and he should be looking to make friends and allies, because that's how governance works. Once brother-in-law sees that, tell him that he can continue to follow Trump, but it's obvious where this is going as long as Trump doesn't change his ways. Put the blame on Trump, not your brother-in-law.

Good point about prior tRUMP coverage (I've always wondered about prior coverage, e.g., where was it?). I did suspect there was some, but didn't really know where to go/look at.

Thanks for providing references for me to look into prior articles by this guy (Mr. Johnson). I'm sure he's got the last laugh, eh?

In short, tRUMP got tons of free coverage out the wazoo during primaries/election cycle (which he/tRUMP encouraged), but now it is coming back to bite him in spades (all the news is fake, which is a nicer term to use then flat out calling them liars). Maybe to avoid possibly lawsuits?

Serves him/tRUMP right, for now more and more of us are learning how bad he really is, and what a disaster his presidency is.

I suspect that GOP is going along w/ tRUMP still (for most part), because if they don't, they'll lose tRUMP's voters.

What really surprises me so far, is that tRUMP hasn't declared himself an independent yet (no longer w/ GOP, since they can't get tRUMP bills passed (if any ever proposed by tRUMP other than a stupid tweet)).

Thanks 'not fooled'

You know, the CEO as the big idea man who comes up with Big Ideas and tells everybody else to iron out the details and signs a paper putting his Big Ideas into law and then we get some sort of Utopia. It's a simple world for simpletons.

His hate speech to children last week actually got through to one or two of them here and there, though, so if he keeps up his completely tone deaf performances, that cult's going to start to dwindle a bit.

who risked other people's money and then left them holding the debts when his projects went bankrupt again and again, that the only way he ever turned a profit on anything was by stiffing suppliers and contractors.

You'll find the coverage in glossy magazines, not all of them on the left, the articles widely spaced because Donny does have a habit of suing anybody who tells the truth about him. He usually doesn't follow up after the first filing, he just wants to make people sweat.

They don't know or care what is going on. They arent really following it much. When asked about the Russians, many said Putin was ok. All of the problems, they said it is just the left stirring things up and trying to make him look bad. The ONLY half criticism was, he needed to tweet less.

This is what we are up against. The harder we try, the more defensive they become of him.
