that the only thing that kept Watergate from completely destroying their party forever was a group of republican Senators who walked into Nixon's office and told him they were ready willing and able to impeach him if he didn't resign. It's their only way out right now, and the window is rapidly closing.

(58,648 posts)This is way worse than Watergate, because Trump never feels like he owes anybody anything.
This should, by all rights, destroy the Repubs for a decade, at least.

And, being human, they and most like them who have first sold their vote will have then decided to become believers in the "cause." Of course, not many have what is probably McConnell's almost pathologic lack of commitment to any ideals or ideology. Ryan, otoh, is a true extremist, and many others in Congress were put there because they are also. Most on the strong and hard right ultimately are every bit as deluded and dishonest, and ready to follow orders, as Rump's very base base.

Hortensis
(58,785 posts)should already have, and be forced to rethink, reject and rebuild. The revolution Bernie calls for where it's genuinely, and in this case desperately, needed.
But half the human race is genetically wired to be conservative to various degrees. They're not going away. They'll never be "finished."
We really, really need to ally with moderate conservatives to support the democracy we inherited and oppose destabilizing, destructive extremism from both sides. We did that for a while in the 20th Century and absolutely no accident that that was our shining era of great progressive advancements.

(36,423 posts)What republican senator has the courage to do that today? Certainly not McConnell. McCain, this is you opportunity to exit the stage a winner, and make your mark in the history books.
