It took DEF CON hackers minutes to own US voting machines

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/07/29/us_voting_machines_hacking/

DEF CON After the debacle of the 2000 presidential election count, the US invested heavily in electronic voting systems – but not, it seems, the security to protect them.

This year at the DEF CON hacking conference in Las Vegas, 30 computer-powered ballot boxes used in American elections were set up in a simulated national White House race – and hackers got to work physically breaking the gear open to find out what was hidden inside.

In less than 90 minutes, the first cracks in the systems' defenses started appearing, revealing an embarrassing low level of security. Then one was hacked wirelessly.

My BIL works for a major supplier of elec. voting machines. He has said for years that they are easy to hack. Can't understand how no one heeds the messages.

Together, they keep enough people believing their vote is counted in good faith - while giving them all the power they need to make sure they keep plenty of Scott Walkers in office.

10. Somebody needs to hack a real election and make it grotesquely obvious.

You know, make a ridiculous write-in candidate win, like Daffy Duck. "With 97% of precincts reporting, we can now call Pennsylvania for . . . Daffy Duck." "Wolf, that can't be right." "I just report the numbers. I don't judge."

Maybe that scenario would trigger a serious national investigation.

11. I love how Voting Supervisors always insist their systems are impenetrable.

And it's simply because the various equipment mfgrs tell them it is. It would be too much work for them to find out for themselves. They always appear in the media just before an election to pass on what they are assured by their vendors and then when their systems are compromised they put on their shock and awe face. "Well gollee, how in the world did that happen?" It happens every voting cycle and it's just like clock work.
