Hate to break it to y'all. You can babble Jesus 100 times and hour, and pray like the dickens. You can go to church, and sing in the choir. You can give away free bibles, and protest outside very aborting clinic in the land. But....
If you support taking away health insurance from millions simply because you hate Obama.
If you support cutting food stamps and school lunches for starving children.
If you support voter suppression of minorities.
If you support helping corporations pollute our planet at will and poison our kids.
If you support helping billionaires and the companies they control rob our families with their "free market" scam.
You are a Republican and you are not going to heaven.
Sorry.
When you get to St. Peter, he will give you a thumbs down, just like McCain gave to McConnell the other day.
And you will spend eternity in HELL.
Don't say you weren't warned.

(115,066 posts)Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see you a stranger and take you in, or naked and clothe you? Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you? And the King will answer and say to them, Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.
Then He will also say to those on the left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave me no food; I was thirsty and you gave me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take me in, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.
Then they also will answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you? Then He will answer them, saying, Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me. And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
In other words, Jesus said selfish assholes will go to Hell. Go read your Bibles, you selfish assholes.

(50,419 posts)If you ask any Fundamentalist Christian, they will tell you the parable of the sheep and the goats describes what happens to people who don't become Christians. In reality, this is what happens to people who claim to be Christians but don't live in a Christ-like manner...like all Republicans.

(146,116 posts)it doesn't really matter. We live for a time and then we die. For some, things we do while we live continue, as with laws passed by legislators, but only until they are changed.
And, if one accepts that premise, there is no overriding law generated by a deity that does not actuall exist.
I suspect that the people you're talking about, the Republicans, accepted that premise long, long ago, despite their protestations to the contrary. I've suspected that for a very, very long time. So, they're not bound by any of that religious nonsense, they think, and they behave accordingly.

(115,066 posts)The thing is, they apply their religious principles selectively. Even if Matthew 25 says that if you're a selfish asshole you'll go to Hell, they don't worry about going to Hell because they don't think they are selfish assholes. I think some of them truly believe that they are righteous Christians and fully compliant with Matthew 25 and all that other stuff Jesus said about helping the poor, because they throw five bucks in the collection plate on Sundays, or bring a casserole to a neighbor whose spouse passed away, or visit a sick friend in the hospital, or give their old clothes to Good Will. They just think they get to pick and choose whom they help, and they don't think they are obligated to help Those People (the undeserving ones who don't look like them). More importantly, they don't think the government should be doing the helping with their taxes.

(146,116 posts)What that is exactly, though, is pretty hard to determine from their words. You can get a better idea from their actions, I think.
One of my reasons for leaving religious believe entirely was observation of how people related to their professed beliefs. It seemed to me, that with very, very few exceptions, adherence to religious principles only occurred when adherence was beneficial to the real world goals of the people I observed. When it was not beneficial, those people believed that adherence was not necessary, or was optional or conditional in some way.
I found very few people for whom that was not true, so I decided to simply back away and establish an ethical compass for myself that was based what was in common among various belief systems. It's a pretty simple thing, really
I don't think that any of the major world religions include conditional belief as part of dogma. So, that's how I came up with what I wrote. I don't think those Republicans are actually believers in the fundamentals of their professed religion. That would be far too inconvenient.

(115,066 posts)(and many other religions, for that matter). You don't get to pick and choose which poor, weak, marginalized people you help; you just help whoever is in need. So yes, there's a vast amount of hypocrisy among "religious" people. I have also observed that what they claim God wants them to think and do corresponds quite directly to what they, themselves, think and do.

(146,116 posts)If it's convenient to follow the teachings, that's great. If not, then you don't really have to. That seems to be the belief system a lot of Republicans follow. That's why I doubt the actual belief they hold. I think even the belief is a matter of convenience or perhaps just the usefulness of being seen as a believer.
I'm a skeptic when it comes to human behavior, basically.

(28,027 posts)Since the Spirit entered them, they are eternally blessed as being chosen to sit by the right side of Jesus.
It's a perverse 20th Century scam to attract people to a church, and attracting them it does.
After all, who doesn't want to have the Holy Spirit live within them, instead of something on the outside?
It sells, and sells well--as the churches make money hand over fist. Creating pompous asses of the lot.

(146,116 posts)Christianity, itself, is the easiest of religions. You profess your belief and you are accepted as a Christian. Then, if you fail to follow the teachings, you simply repent and are assured of forgiveness and will still have your place at the right hand. It's a graceful religion for it's followers, and allows almost unlimited straying, as long as you have a chance to repent.
Christianity is the one-step, short-cut religion.

(24,364 posts)Ever stop to think that the Rs have figured out that there is no eternal punishment awaiting them? That doesn't stop them from using the childish fears of religion to their own ends. The Rs can get away with plenty while people erroneously think "they'll get theirs."
Silly and pointless.
