This is actually pretty amazing from a GOP Senator.

I will let the liberals answer for their own sins in this regard. (There are many.) But we conservatives mocked Barack Obamas failure to deliver on his pledge to change the tone in Washington even as we worked to assist with that failure. It was we conservatives who, upon Obamas election, stated that our number-one priority was not advancing a conservative policy agenda but making Obama a one-term presidentthe corollary to this binary thinking being that his failure would be our success and the fortunes of the citizenry would presumably be sorted out in the meantime. It was we conservatives who were largely silent when the most egregious and sustained attacks on Obamas legitimacy were leveled by marginal figures who would later be embraced and legitimized by far too many of us. It was we conservatives who rightly and robustly asserted our constitutional prerogatives as a coequal branch of government when a Democrat was in the White House but who, despite solemn vows to do the same in the event of a Trump presidency, have maintained an unnerving silence as instability has ensued. To carry on in the spring of 2017 as if what was happening was anything approaching normalcy required a determined suspension of critical faculties. And tremendous powers of denial.

(26,123 posts)Maybe he's gotten some rational feedback from his constituents. However, I've pretty much given up on any of the GOP actually being honest and deciding to serve the public, rather than the lobbyists.

(9,426 posts)They disrespected, blocked everything President Obama tried to do, mocked him (birth cert.) and NOW they have the biggest ASSHOLE in the country in the WH. We had a highly respected, intelligent, CLASSY man trying to do what is best for the citizens, and the gop acted like fools. Too late to repair all the damage. They should have gotten behind President Obama with his ideas, and by now we would have a decent healthcare program. Eight long, painful years later, they want to excuse themselves for the damage? Go to HELL, Flakey. We will not forget what the gop did for those 8 years, or what they have done for the lousy few months Orange Mistake has ruled with his tiny hands.

(16,133 posts)There's a great story in "Boogey Man" a documentary about Atwater that I'd recommend to anyone regardless of party.
Long story short: Lee got a bible from a friend when he got sick. He professed to love this bible, telling everyone who would listen how much he was reading it and how it had affected him. As a consequence everyone around Atwater thought he had softened and seen the light.
Not long after Lee died some folks were packing up his stuff. Among many things, they found Lee's bible, still in the plastic shrinkwrap it came in.

(38,328 posts)Near the end of the article Flake says:
"Even as our own government was documenting a concerted attack against our democratic processes by an enemy foreign power, our own White House was rejecting the authority of its own intelligence agencies, disclaiming their findings as a Democratic ruse and a hoax. Conduct that would have had conservatives up in arms had it been exhibited by our political opponents now had us dumbstruck."
These are towards the end of the article...very important!!!!below, my interpretation: ______________________________________________________________________________________
What he is saying is..(meaning, not exact words..)..........if it were a Democrat doing the same as Trump...we conservatives would be up in arms, ....but because it is a Republican...........we are dumbstruck, and say and do nothing...also,...............................................
......our president is rejecting our own intelligence agencies...( FBI, CIA..etc..)..and saying their findings are a Democratic hoax..................
Flake is telling the truth here....at least someone is...........hat is off to Senator Flake..

(5,730 posts)happens. It's not like the Dems can do much, as we aren't the majority. They determine what the committees take up, what gets to the floor. We are smashed. Without the 3 Repubs, Obamacare would be gone. BTW, Hatch said, in spite of DTs edict, he wasn't willing to stop paying the subsidies.

(34,122 posts)of sorts. He proposes no real solutions, only outlines the problem that every Republican politician knows but couldn't care less about. Hey, they're controlling everything, so why rock the Titanic? He's voted with that orange POS 95% of the time, most recently for the Skinny Repeal that would've devastated people in his state. Why? And why pen this now? There's something else going on because this just doesn't sound sincere.
I don't buy it.

(38,328 posts)and do something.....we are at fault....perhaps something else is going on...but this is honest and true....
and he may be the only Republican to say this..We all know it is true, but for one of them to say this, that is very unusual....for whatever reasons..this is still important...

But he still votes with the GOP on ACA repeal and other things Dumpy wants. He's not known for being a maverick.
