I consider it to be a waste of time, I'm mostly in Facebook to get logged on to a few websites, when I visit them.
But I refuse to go on Twitter.
On edit: I forgot to mention I do use Facebook messenger to talk face-to-face with my sister in Oregon on occasion.
I also use Skype to talk to a good friend in Georgia, and sometimes we get a three-way conversation going with a guy in South Dakota.

(15,546 posts)I hate nothing more than being just one of the crowd/mainstream. All of my life - 68 years - can't stand to be like the masses. I was fortunate enough to have two parents who taught me and my six siblings to think for yourself, don't follow the crowd, be an individual. I am grateful to them for that.
I have never been on Twitter. Can't even stand it when DU'ers repost twitter stuff because it's too hard to read. I'm on Facebook but rarely post and maybe check in once a week on a distant relative who is.
Twitter is one more step in the dumbing down of the US. And the Dum-Dum in Chief leads the pack for stupidity.

My mom instilled that in me also. Be your own person, don't follow the crowd. Ima little easy breezy bohemian in some ways. Some might say a contrarian. And it suits me fine! 🤗

(15,546 posts)if only because my father used to say, "he and I went to different schools together". LOL
To look at me, some people might believe I'm like the rest, but I had to adopt that outward appearance and behavior sometimes for survival reasons. It did serve me well in my past and even now in obtaining a job. Thus, no bohemian dress for me, but having used that term, it reminds me that my father had bohemian roots.

(20,254 posts)I was a tad avant guarde in my teenage/early adult stage.
Coming from Czechoslovakian heritage, I'm somewhat free of conventional and acceptable in some areas. My maternal grandmother had mismatched dinnerware, but she was outstanding in making way tasty food! They didn't 'consume' all this craziness that we have going on today. Heaven knows I'm not against stimulating the economy, but stealth marketing has you buy-buy-buying. My family's mantra--making do with what you have, I.e. nothing wrong with mismatched dishes! My mom drummed into me, it's not how you look on the outside that matters. It's what's on the inside that counts. Simple, but stays with you forever.
(DUers will say, "Get a room!" (Use PM!) Don't shout me down now. Just being friendly to a kindred spirit!)

(24,311 posts)I have trained the important people in my life such as kids and grandkids that the only way to communicate with me when I'm not in the same room is to call me or answer the phone when I call them. I think texting is like saying "I don't want to have a conversation with you so here's just one sentence. I find that extremely rude and an inefficient way to communicate thoughts and ideas. Typing one sentence with your thumbs then waiting to see if they answer you or not in the next few hours is technologically as efficient as using carrier pigeons.

Funny, since I first logged onto the internet in 1979, and was one of the earlier pseudo-anonymous residents of Usenet.
Facebook, alas, I succumbed, as it was the only way to keep in touch with some friends and family other than calling them on the phone, and I hate calling people on the phone.
I grew up in an environment where the only good reason for a long distance phone call was that someone was dying or dead. Notices of engagements or babies born, or any lesser news, could be accomplished by mail.

My current band has a twitter, facebook, and instagram account. The only one that gets updated with any regularity is facebook. The others don't get enough hits to bother updating them.
140 characters isn't enough to allow for nuance, and splitting a long post into multiple tweets is as annoying as old SMS texts that would split up after 160 characters. It's for people with short attention spans, IMHO.

Just a good way to get worked up for no purpose or read unverified and often false news.

(19,204 posts)I don't do Facebook, I don't do ANY of the "social networking". I finally bit the bullet and got a cell phone, but still retain my old land line. It's not that I'm tech illiterate. I'm well aware of technical advances and completely computer literate, but I just DON'T WANT to be that accessible, or share what I had for breakfast with everyone.
IMO, people leave too much information about themselves lying around, waiting for anyone who wants it to gather it and use it, for whatever their personal "needs" might be. I'd like to think that there's a LITTLE privacy left in this world. Maybe I'm being naive, but why make it easier for unsavory characters to glean my information from "social" sources?
That's just me. Your mileage may vary.

What that means is you see what they have to say in a feed. And, instant links to news articles they have written. So I get the feeds from all my favorite news people and columnists.
And, when something big happens - they use a hashtag so you can see everything about a topic. Say there's a horrible hurricane near where you live....let's call it #Betsy. You type in #Betsy search and see tons of info - from every different weather source and from people on the ground where it happened.

(288 posts)It's exceedingly difficult to see a particular user's tweets (without a bunch of extra junk thrown in). Getting to replies usually takes me one or two mis-clicks, and returning to the previous pages loses my position.
The latest annoyance is full page popovers imploring me to create an account-- not just when I first hit the site but randomly and repeatedly-- and that's made me avoid twitter altogether.
I don't have anything against twitter and these problems are fixable. The pop over is baffling -- that's space for a full sized ad (I.e. Actual revenue) for twitter and they're instead using it to drive traffic away from the site...

Awsi Dooger
(14,565 posts)I do read tweets occasionally when somebody links to them, here or elsewhere.
Facebook has never been a consideration. But I'd probably be good at Twitter because I'm a creative thinker and have never had any problem with analogies or unique phrasing. Many family members and friends have encouraged me to join Twitter.
Several problems:
* I have no interest in being contacted by friends from my past. That happened when email became popular and it didn't work out well for either side. I'm not going to respond back and forth dependably. Invariably they expected tons of my time, and garbage like chat. No chance I'm going to chat. Likewise no chance I'm going to text back and forth. IMO, email was a necessary advancement but everything subsequent has been superfluous.
* I'm still on Las Vegas time even though I'm living in Miami. I don't go to sleep until 5 AM at the earliest and don't wake until noon or thereabouts. I hated when friends were sending me emails as soon as they woke up without realizing I was just going to sleep. That's why I'm not responding for half a day.
* Sports are my specialty but I watch 95% of the time on DVR replay. Consequently I'd be tweeting something clever about a sporting event that happened many hours ago if not days ago.
However, if I don't do it I'd probably regret it someday. Perhaps a themed account not carrying my name. I'm not sure if that's possible. That's how much I know.

But I check it only periodically and only to see what their feed has added.
Most of the time I am on the computer I am scanning family photos, doing genealogical research, editing the photos and getting them online, and of course on DU. I don't have time to piss away on ephemeral things such as Facebook and Twitter.
