(33,956 posts)they bottleneck into these areas and there isn't any other way out.
I was gobsmacked when I heard they were still open.
Lots of folks will be trapped on those roads with this monster looming.

(33,956 posts)I seem to remember it going down to a single lane....but it has been many years since I have been down that far south.
I was also thinking of the one in Raymondville--it was a little more open but you can't get out of the valley unless you go through it.
Going through these checkpoints all over Texas....you know they always wave through the white people and detain the brown people.
There are MANY legal brown people down that way but they will be stopped and forced to prove that and that will create a huge bottleneck.

(16,829 posts)Category 4 hurricanes tend to produce more extensive curtainwall failures, with some complete structural failure on small residences. Heavy, irreparable damage and near complete destruction of gas station canopies and other wide span overhang type structures are common. Mobile and manufactured homes are often flattened. Most trees, except for the heartiest, are uprooted or snapped, isolating many areas. These storms cause extensive beach erosion, while terrain may be flooded far inland. Total and long-lived electrical and water losses are to be expected, possibly for many weeks.
The 1900 Galveston hurricane, the deadliest natural disaster to hit the United States, peaked at an intensity that corresponds to a modern-day Category 4 storm. Other examples of storms that peaked at Category 4 intensity, and made landfall at that intensity include: Hazel (1954), Gracie (1959), Flora (1963), Cleo (1964), Madeline (1976), Frederic (1979), Joan (1988), Iniki (1992), Luis (1995), Iris (2001), Charley (2004), Dennis (2005), Gustav (2008), Ike (2008) and Joaquin (2015).

(4,033 posts)Border Patrol Will Keep Checkpoints Open During Hurricane Harvey
Because the important thing during a hurricane is making sure evacuees aren't undocumented immigrants.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced it will keep open interior border checkpoints in the path of Hurricane Harvey, drawing condemnation from civil liberties and immigration groups.
"Border Patrol checkpoints will not be closed unless there is a danger to the safety of the traveling public and our agents," CBP said in a statement to the Texas Tribune yesterday. "Border Patrol resources, including personnel and transportation, will be deployed on an as needed basis to augment the efforts and capabilities of local-response authorities."

(1,040 posts)when asked during a news conference if credentials were going to be checked at evacuation centers, said (and I paraphrase here), No, our main priority is saving lives, not turning people in.
I was very surprised at his response.
