Plenty of racists too, as the 1863 draft riots demonstrated. Troops that had fought at Gettysburg had to be brought in to restore order after days of rioting and lynching, which included a white mob burning down a black orphanage.
I'm sure, at the least, Trump would have seen "good people" on both sides.

Much of the wealth exploited in the last half of the 19th Century had roots in the explosive growth of business during the Civil War. Many people don't realize that the transcontinental railroad, one of the earliest major transportation efforts, was initiated during the Civil War. One of the methods for building the Western rail net was giveaways of land for rights of way, in some cases swaths of land hundreds of miles wide. Land speculation was rife and opportunities for graft were widespread.
Trump would have been right at home.
