FUKUOKA — The death toll caused by heavy rain in northern Kyushu climbed to 26 on Sunday, local authorities said.
In Yame, Fukuoka Prefecture, a 70-year-old man died after being caught in a landslide, while another man died in Yanagawa, also in Fukuoka, after being retrieved from a car at an irrigation channel floodgate, according to the authorities.
A total of six people were still missing as of 9 p.m. in Fukuoka and Kumamoto prefectures, where police continued to search.
Around 3,000 people were believed to have been isolated in Yame after roads to residential areas were cut off. On Sunday, the Self-Defense Forces began flying in food and water to isolated communities by helicopter.
Meanwhile, the Yanagawa Municipal Government was racing to repair two sections of a levee that gave way on the swollen Yabe River on Saturday but lifted the citywide evacuation order.

FUKUOKA — The death toll from the downpours in southwestern Japan reached 28 on Monday when two of six people declared missing were found dead in Kumamoto and Fukuoka prefectures, police and firefighters said
The torrential rain since Thursday in northern Kyushu caused floods and mudslides in Kumamoto, Oita and Fukuoka prefectures, sweeping away cars and people without warning.
Residents embarked on a full-scale cleanup Monday following record rainfall that forced hundreds of thousands to flee and left at least 32 dead or missing.
Television footage showed residents, volunteers and local officials shovelling mud and removing damaged furniture from their homes while mechanical diggers worked to clear roads of trees and debris. The four days of intense rain also caused river levees to give way, inundating or destroying houses with torrents of muddy water.

The weather lately seems to be either flood or drought (and drought's consequences, i.e., fires) and not much in-between (we're having TS Allison-style floods here, and had drought/fires last year.) I hope it lets up for them soon.
