Under water: Residential areas and fields are shown submerged in Yanagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture, after the Yabe River levee collapsed Saturday during heavy rain. KYODO

Kyodo

FUKUOKA — The death toll caused by heavy rain in northern Kyushu climbed to 26 on Sunday, local authorities said.
In Yame, Fukuoka Prefecture, a 70-year-old man died after being caught in a landslide, while another man died in Yanagawa, also in Fukuoka, after being retrieved from a car at an irrigation channel floodgate, according to the authorities.

A total of six people were still missing as of 9 p.m. in Fukuoka and Kumamoto prefectures, where police continued to search.

Around 3,000 people were believed to have been isolated in Yame after roads to residential areas were cut off. On Sunday, the Self-Defense Forces began flying in food and water to isolated communities by helicopter.

Meanwhile, the Yanagawa Municipal Government was racing to repair two sections of a levee that gave way on the swollen Yabe River on Saturday but lifted the citywide evacuation order.

Tsunami, earthquakes, typhoon, floods, landslides, even a deadly tornado. It's getting hard to keep track of all the disasters that the donation boxes in stores are collecting for.

The forecast for the whole island of Kyushu is for more heavy rains starting tomorrow night, and now a typhoon is heading toward the island. They really are having a hard time in Kyushu.

So far, the flooding has been occurring in Kumamoto, Oita and Fukuoka prefectures. I have a friend who lives in Miyazaki. I'll send her an e-mail to ask her how things are in her area (near Miyako-no-jo).

She said that in her part of the prefecture (near the border with Kagoshima Prefecture) there hasn't been any problem. I don't know if your relatives are in Miyazaki City, or somewhere else in Miyazaki Prefecture, but they should be OK.

There are lightning warnings for the entire prefecture, and locally heavy rain warnings.

But my friend did not seem worried. She is in the southern part of the prefecture, about 35 miles south of Miyazaki City.

The tsuyu (or baiu) front has become stationary, that's why they're getting so much rain in Kyushu now.

Kyushu death toll rises to 28 as rain abates
Kyodo, AFP-Jiji

FUKUOKA — The death toll from the downpours in southwestern Japan reached 28 on Monday when two of six people declared missing were found dead in Kumamoto and Fukuoka prefectures, police and firefighters said

The torrential rain since Thursday in northern Kyushu caused floods and mudslides in Kumamoto, Oita and Fukuoka prefectures, sweeping away cars and people without warning.

Residents embarked on a full-scale cleanup Monday following record rainfall that forced hundreds of thousands to flee and left at least 32 dead or missing.

Television footage showed residents, volunteers and local officials shovelling mud and removing damaged furniture from their homes while mechanical diggers worked to clear roads of trees and debris. The four days of intense rain also caused river levees to give way, inundating or destroying houses with torrents of muddy water.

I read your post in the LBN story this morning and neglected to remember to look them up this evening. Now I can go give some

The weather lately seems to be either flood or drought (and drought's consequences, i.e., fires) and not much in-between (we're having TS Allison-style floods here, and had drought/fires last year.) I hope it lets up for them soon.

I donated to this one: Building Healthy Communities for Recovery

If they develop one specific to the floods, then I'll donate to that one, too. I figure it's too early for them yet in creating groups just for that cause.

I'm doing better financially (and liking my job better) so I have more to give. Which reminds me, I need to look at kiva.org again...
