Sheriffs deputies in California claimed they feared for their lives after shooting a man who was filming them from his own garage.
The Sacramento sheriffs deputies shot Danny Sanchez on Friday. Sanchez is currently in the hospital at the UC Davis Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments, according to his father, John Sanchez.
The shooting occurred when the Sheriffs department SWAT team showed up to arrest a neighbor, Ben Ledford, 62, after he fired off an illegal machine gun from across the street.
When Sanchez saw the incident, and the SWAT team converge, he began recording from his garage. He assumed there wouldnt be any problem, since he was so far away from the incident, on his own property and even out on the edge of the garage.

I hope both men recover soon.
The one on private property ? The crime was across the street How does that work? They shot up his garage and arrested him? Then searched his fathers home?
For what legal reason ? I'm sure after they shoot six bullets into your house you don't dare ask for a warrant . It could prove deadly

(45,435 posts)Record the Police! Except when they're doing things they don't want recorded, then they really "fear for their lives".
The white guy who barricaded himself with the machine gun in his house was not shot, for the record.
Only the unarmed latino across the street was shot and an innocent dog died somehow.

(63,208 posts)Whatever happens, these trained, armored, and heavily armed law enforcement professionals are afraid of impending doom a shocking amount of the time, yet untrained civilians are required to remain calm and professional manner while a crazed cop waves a gun in their face, sometimes after erroneously kicking down the civilian's door at 2 in the morning.
And if the civilian fails to comport himself in a calm and respectful manner, well, then the cop is afraid for his life and can shoot the civilian.

(82,849 posts)As Castile was bleeding out in the front seat next to her, his girlfriend recorded the death with a preternatural calm that probably saved her life. Afterwards, of course, I actually saw comments critical of Diamond Reynolds that she was too calm, and therefore suspicious. I know that if I had been sitting in her seat, I would hope that I would confine myself to gibbering hysterics, but I can't say that I wouldn't wet myself or worse.
But yeah, we live in a society where cops panic and blow away citizens, while the survivors are expected to remain calm. But not too calm.

(54,371 posts)They have cops like these to thank.
A lot of the cops out there have no business even carrying badges, much less firearms. Until they are relieved of both, incidents like these two will remain commonplace, and the few loonies out for revenge will only multiply in number. As long as the standards for hiring a police officer are set by guys like Joe Arpaio, this kind of event will remain the norm in our country.

(9,895 posts)then you are NOT fit to be a police officer and should find work more amenable to your personal constitution.
Not everyone can be a police officer. It is hard work, unforgiving and dangerous. It intersperses long periods of tedious, boring work with bursts of adrenaline fueled chaos. I can't even conceive of doing it myself, but for those who can I have deep admiration.
That list does NOT include any officer whose defense in a civilian shooting is "I feared for my life..."
That has become a cop-out (no pun intended) and is demeaning to the true heroes and loyal servicemen and women around the country.
If you are that scared and that ready to end a life in exchange for feeling safe, then you are unfit for duty and need to quit before you kill again or before you kill the first time. Bravery is feeling fear like any normal person would and then choosing to do the difficult thing, not the easiest. Pulling a trigger on a service weapon should be the last resort of a courageous officer (and even then, in my eyes, by returning fire or in response to a refusal to disarm, not initiating an exchange of gunfire unilaterally), not the go to excuse for trigger happy cowards.

(29,322 posts)I posted the same thing on post #19. If police have a "reasonable fear" than they can use deadly force so if they shoot somebody cops are always going to claim "I feared for my life" but more often than not the cop isn't as afraid as the person they're shooting.

(29,322 posts)So cops always say "I feared for my life" no matter if the shooting is clean or not. It's a standard defense.
