If you want some protection from floating fire ants, mix up a spray bottle of dish soap and water. The soap will cause the floating mass to break apart and they gone drown.
I'd just avoid them and leave them alone unless they came calling.

was flying DC-3s dropping fire ant bait, probably 10+ years ago, but it sure worked. I have now begun seeing a few mounds again. I used to go through 2-3 lbs of Amdro a year just to keep them killed on my small property.
