We need to clearly label that it was/is wrong to enslave and treat human beings as less than what they are, less than the rest of us. This nation needs to understand and take a clear stand against racism. Most of us are racist, but most of us are appalled at the fact we might be unknowingly racist. This is why defining racism is so important. This is why understanding what happens when a segment of the population treats another segment of the population as "inferior". You get exactly what we are seeing now.

We can and should take down all monuments erected in glorification of white supremacy, but we can't erase slavery or all the people who lived that era from our history altogether and of course shouldn't try.
I have a wonderful old book documenting historic southern gardens into which a writer peculiarly slipped two very off-topic references to the need for the KKK to maintain order. I won't be burning it or donating it to "gather dust" in a museum.
