What happens Willard exits the ticket - does the VP become the presidential candidate?
Pawlenty anyone?

Since there is no precedent for the top of the ticket quitting, I would imagine it would be up to the RNC to select the party candidate. The VP nominee would be an option, but not a lock, necessarily. When Eagleton left the Dem ticket in '72, McGovern picked a new running mate (Shriver), who was ratified by the DNC, since the convention had adjourned. Whether the VP candidate would change with selection of a different presidential candidate is open to question, unless the VP candidate moved up to the top spot; the original VP might not be a good match to whoever takes over the presidential nomination, so I would suppose that a new VP candidate might be chosen as well, again, by the RNC.
This is all just a semi-somewhat-educated guess, of course.....If Romney stepped aside as the P candidate, the turmoil would be un-frickin'-believable. So I'm guessing that whatever shakes out, he'd try to weather the storm, and take his licks in the general election. (This would be pretty much a case of the ship going down with the captain.....or, in Romney's case, the yacht.......)

(21,078 posts)know they aren't going to win with this flawed candidate against Obama. They just might chance it to help save the Senate and the House candidates. Just speculating of course.

(22,271 posts)in a lather screeching, "Romney's gonna quit! Romney's gonna quit!" Romney's not going anywhere. Good goddess, they shoved W through TWICE, Romney's not going to back out, they've got too much invested in him. Besides, they know changing candidates AFTER the primaries will be much worse than just riding it out with Romney.
I'm curious about your VP pick. Do you think they'll go with a white Southerner to pick up the TeaKlan vote?

(45,488 posts)The Romney campaign also thinks McDonnell can win VA for him, despite the polls showing the opposite.
They hope he can bring in some southern votes that would hesitate voting for a Massachusetts elite Mormon.

(58,662 posts)History shows that VPs for losing tickets don't get the top spot nod afterwards. Accepting a VP nod this cycle could be a career ender.
I'm kind of enjoying this.
