(35,374 posts)"Entitle" just means "to give (someone) a legal right or a just claim to receive or do something." It's just a verb. It has a past participle "entitled."
"Entitled" is also an adjective that means "believing oneself to be inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment". (Both definitions are the attributionless definition Google plagiarizes, Google being such a respecter of (only its own) intellectual property.) "The rich think themselves entitled."
They're homophones. But their meanings are different and their grammatical contexts are always different. The adjective ascribes an attitude to a person, and is a one-place predicate. The past participle has to have "who's entitling" and "entitled to what?" answered someplace in the context.
Here Trump's saying that churches should have the legal right to claim FEMA reimbursement, and that right would have to come from policy or legislation (or court decision).

(6,086 posts)The argument for funding churches is always, "They're helping people, just like those other organizations. Why shouldn't they get some government money too?"
My response is, if this argument works for the First Baptist Church, it should apply equally well to the Church of Satan.

(9,739 posts)This will cost tRump dearly amongst his base, deeply committed Christians that they are, who see it as not only their duty but also their great pleasure come to the rescue of their fellow human beings. Doesn't he know that "entitled" is a filthy word to Christian conservatives? I think he's really stepped in it this time!
