China will set a deadline for automakers to end sales of fossil-fuel powered vehicles, a move aimed at pushing companies to speed efforts in developing electric vehicles for the worlds biggest auto market.
Xin Guobin, the vice minister of industry and information technology, said the government is working with other regulators on a timetable to end production and sales. The move will have a profound impact on the environment and growth of Chinas auto industry, Xin said at an auto forum in Tianjin on Saturday.
A ban on combustion-engine vehicles will help push both local and global automakers to shift toward electric vehicles, a carrot-and-stick approach that could boost sales of energy-efficient cars and trucks and reduce air pollution while serving the strategic goal of cutting oil imports. The government offers generous subsidies to makers of new-energy vehicles. It also plans to require automakers to earn enough credits or buy them from competitors with a surplus under a new cap-and-trade program for fuel economy and emissions.

(10,127 posts)This leads me to believe they are referring to cars for their own market. Are they telling GM to make their US bound cars somewhere else?

(28,859 posts)But this should have been done by every country
way before this.
Climate change is an escalating process, and we're
only seeing the beginning regardless.
Still, I guess it's good to do something.

(51,590 posts)But CO2 isn't the only problem. The permanent frost is currently melting and releasing tons of Methane which is just as damaging. Since this is relatively unknown territory for scientists it is very difficult to predict anything. Last night on Bill Maher he had a guest return to his show and they mentioned how our diet (eating meat which causes methane to be released into the atmosphere) is just about as important a factor in climate change as cars, factories, pollution, etc. We are not going to be able to turn this around...it is too late but at least SOME COUNTRIES are making an effort!
