Oh good grief. Someone complained about flags on fire trucks?

SEMINOLE, Fla. -- There are American flag patches on Seminole Fire Rescue uniforms. There are American flags flying outside Seminole's fire stations.

There are not, however, American flags flying from Seminole Fire Rescue vehicles. There used to be, though. And that's the problem.

Seminole city management, its firefighters and a resident or residents with encyclopedic knowledge of the U.S. Flag Code have been battling for months about American flags.

A few months ago, some firefighters put some flags on some city Fire Rescue vehicles. Fire Rescue spokeswoman Alison Shanabrook didn't know Sunday exactly where on the vehicles the employees put the flags. She did know, however, where they didn't put them.

The complaint is that the flag isn't being properly displayed per flag etiquette.

"The flags' staffs were not "fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender" like the Flag Code prescribes."

Who the hell knows the Flag Code? Probably some Boy Scout is reporting this problem. Most likely, the firemen just tied it to the bucket in back.

But people read the headline and assume is some godless commie left-winger who hates flags.

It helps when arguing with a worship-the-cloth-but-not-what-it-stands-for type. It especially torques off republicans when you show them pictures of W. and McCain and Iraqi War supporters autographing or writing on a flag while throwing around the word desecration.

Change "history" when he went on a tour of a fort where an army general had once led some settlers to its safety in the 1800s. You see, unbeknownst to the general, enemy Indians had taken it over. As he peered toward the fort, a light rain was falling, but he could still see Old Glory waving against the sunset. As he approached, the gates burst open, and the Indians attacked. In the midst of the fighting, the general was able to out-maneuver the hostiles and lead the settlers into the fort and shut the gates. Casualties were high, but because of his quick-thinking, the general had saved half the settlers and was hailed as a hero... Until Encyclopedia Brown pointed out to the tour guide telling the story that the fact that the flag was still on the pole at sunset AND in a rain should have alerted him that something was wrong.

Dun dun dunnnnnn.... Amazing what we remember from our childhoods.
