Yet another example of how a business person has not idea how public service works.

Trump told a reporter that the country has great people responding to the massive storms and that a group that really deserves tremendous credit is the United States Coast Guard," according to a White House pool report.
What they've done I mean, they've gone right into that, and you never know. When you go in there, you don't know if you're going to come out. They are really if you talk about branding, no brand has improved more than the United States Coast Guard, Trump said.

(10,016 posts)His voice made me cringe as usual, but it was almost passable as a mediocre statement in times of a national emergency until the "branding" comment.
Aside being a stupid thing to think to say, the Coast Guard would have needed more than "branding" to survive Trump's previously proposed cuts. Branding. WTF.

(9,888 posts)thing to say even by Trumpian standards. If he knew anything outside his bubble he'd know that the Coast Guard "brand" was pretty good before recent events. The only time the average non-coastal citizen sees the CG is in these disasters when there they are, doing their job in wind, rain, waves and cold.

(32,080 posts)He still has no fucking clue. I'm guessing that the spirochetes ate away the part of his brain that remembers that he wanted to cut $1.3 BILLION from the Coast Guard budget.

(5,857 posts)but to the extent there is a brand, they outstrip the other branches. Higher retention, more selective, most enlisted with degrees, etc. I know many coasties who enlisted because they couldn't get accepted to OCS. The enlistment process usually takes 9 months to a year, and they have their pick of the litter. They also have a huge number of mustangs.
The reason is if you want a job in the maritime industry, they are the top of the heap. In addition, coasties get a tremendous amount of authority, and are actually executing their mission on a daily basis. They also have pretty good bases.

(65,010 posts)The Coast Guard did what they always do. It's not like they had the ability to stop the storm. They rode it out just like everybody else and then came when duty called.
Were they not doing that before?
