Who was he?..A very famous speaker and orator during the 1860s..
Edward Everett delivered a two-hour oration before Lincoln's few minutes of dedicatory remarks at Gettysburg. Lengthy dedication addresses like Everett's were common at cemeteries in this era.
Lincoln's 3 minutes at Gettysburg is one of the most famous speeches ever.. 99.9 percent of Americans haven't got a clue who Edward Everett is/was..let alone what he said.

I remember Clinton giving a long speech once. I think it was nominating Obama for a second term. I commented to a friend who was watching with me, what a waste of time it was. The last 5 minutes were outstanding, but the previous 30 minutes, or so..a complete waste of time.. Just a point of information about long speeches. I got to give a speech next month. Better remember this.

.Lincoln knew enough to keep it short and to the point. That alone says a whole lot.
