FYI: I deleted the Javaman thread.

The Secret Service is aware of the thread -- I have discussed it with them. They advised me to remove the thread.

That is all.

ON EDIT: There is no need to rec this thread. I just put this up so you all would know where Javaman's thread went.

SECOND EDIT: To those of you who are curious: Javaman did not post anything inappropriate. He shared a story about something inappropriate his co-worker said.

mouthing off about Obama. After some discussion, Javaman realized that he was describing a real threat, and called the Secret Service. A lot of people were posting in the thread without realizing that Javaman had made the call.

Kudos to Javaman, an example for the rest of us!

I was one of the responders to Javaman's post.

What was telling is that he didn't respond. I thought that it meant that he did the right thing and reported it.

Little did I, let alone other DUers, know that Javaman, Skinner, and undoubtedly others had things well in hand.

It is just another example of the social responsibility that DU bears. Having been part of the thread makes me proud to be a DUer. Although I agree that it should be deleted, I also think it is one of the proudest moments in DU history.

We are a community who sticks together.

Thank you, Javaman. Thank you, Skinner. Thank you to all who stood tall and supported a long-lived compatriot, Javaman. This is what DU is about.

Humbled by the collective intelligence here, I bow at your heals. This is DU at its best.

call the professionals and let them deal. I'm sure there are hundreds if not thousands of people out there kicking themselves because they thought something wasn't right, but they didn't want to make trouble, so they kept silent and found out later that yes indeed, a child was being abused. Trust your gut!

For instance, I remember Rush Limpballs urging students to call the SS on teachers who criticize Bush.

I've even seen people here recommend a call to SS based on a ridiculous non-threat. The calls can definitely be used as a political weapon (as seen in the F9/11 movie and that guy who bad mouthed Bush at his gym)

But this one in the Javaman thread? Creepy as all get out. A real threat. And the ability to carry out the threat.

It's the political intimidation factor of sending the SS to someone you don't like because you know the SS HAS to respond.

Rush Pigboy, with a nudge and a wink, was encouraging college students to do it,

I was saying often times SS gets used as a political tool (see: Fahrenheit 911) but NOT this case in the OP.

And, yes, I agree with this:
