Florida Nursing Home Residents Died Because Rick Scott Ignored Their Calls
By Sarah Jones on Fri, Sep 15th, 2017 at 5:36 pm
The Governor whom President Trump praised as a 2018 senatorial candidate didnt answer the special cell phone number he gave to healthcare officials to use if they had any problems. The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills in Hollywood nursing home called Florida Governor Rick Scotts cell three times asking for help 36 hours before the first tragic death.

(25,925 posts)I'm going to guess that the windows in that nursing home didn't open, which is typical of modern construction.
People have been living in Florida for a very long time, since well before a/c. But they lived in homes that had windows that opened.
I am NOT giving anyone a pass here, but along with everything else connected to regulations or the lack of response from FPL, we need to rethink some aspects of buildings.
I have lived in some fairly warm places without benefit of a/c (Alexandria, VA, Tucson, AZ) but always had windows that could open and sometimes fans. Right now I live in Santa Fe, which can get warm in the summer. I do without a/c because I don't have fully west facing windows and I can open and close windows and doors to keep my place cool enough even at the warmest part of the year.
I suspect those unfortunate residents simply didn't have a chance. Not with closed windows. Not in Florida.
Yes, we need to hold Rick Scott accountable, as well as anyone else connected to the regulatory process, but we also need to think carefully about how we construct our buildings. Especially considering that global warming isn't going to go away, which means hot places (Florida, Texas, Arizona, etc) will get hotter. And destructive hurricanes will get more destructive over time.

(25,925 posts)Besides, until the advent of near-universal air conditioning, all windows opened. Even in very tall buildings. Also, buildings were designed to provide ventilation. Hence the complex in and out structures of older buildings you can still see in Washington, DC.
Don't get me wrong. Despite the fact that I currently live without a/c, I am a huge fan of it. Maybe I shouldn't be, because without a/c the deep South would not have experienced the enormous population growth that it has, thus the genuine misery of the two hurricanes.
For what it's worth, about a decade ago, when I was looking divorce in the eye, and knew I didn't want to stay in the same city as my ex and his girlfriend, I decided that the overriding criterion would be that I would not live in a city where I had to have a/c in the summer. Personal choice, I know. But it was a very good one.

of Scott?? Or was it a state Dept./Agency?

(3,425 posts)why the staff did not take the residents to the hospital across the road that had working air conditioning.
I am glad to know that they made three attempts to get help but surely as the situation became critical they should have evacuated them to the hospital.
I understand that I have not concept of what it is like to be trapped in a hurricane area and if that solution was not feasible, then I will stand corrected.
