WASHINGTON
Leaders of some of the worlds most influential or controversial countries skipped Donald Trumps debut at the United Nations rather than face the prospect of being caught up in an embarrassing controversy by the unpredictable U.S. president.
The list of state leaders missing the international event is long and growing. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are two of the highest profile absences. But there are many whose faces were noticeably absent during Trumps aggressive speech Tuesday on confronting North Korea, terrorism and communism, including Germanys Angela Merkel, Englands Theresa May, Venezuelas Nicolas Maduro and Mexicos Enrique Peña Nieto.
Diplomats say theyve learned it can be risky to share the spotlight with Trump, who can turn even the most well-intentioned exchange into an international spectacle, such as his notorious call with the Australian prime minister about refugees or the dressing down of NATO leaders at the unveiling of a new headquarters.
Even meetings that should be a good meeting can veer off into bizarre directions, said a former U.S. official in contact with the diplomatic community.

"Don? It's Theresa. So sorry about missing your speech; I'm sure it was brilliant, but I had to stay at Downing because ... I, um, had to wash up before the Queen came by. She's so spontaneous, you never know when she's about to come by, and the place was a right mess. Sorry!"
"Comrade Donald! I so regret not being at U.N. for speech; it was your best, nyet? United States is not so great place for me to be right now, and I do wish you were handling some of your people, if you know what I mean. But come to Moskva soon, stay in best hotel!"

(31,996 posts)What a change! Well I guess if Maduro of Venezuela is a world leader then so is Putin. The article tries to imply that people just skipped Trump's speech but were otherwise present, "were noticeably absent during Trumps aggressive speech ". Merkle, for one, was never at the UN. She is Germany in the middle of an election campaign.

(4,341 posts)the only place he is going in is jail. He is a wanted man, a criminal.
Not sure why the article makes mention of Maduro, he is dumber than Trump, twice as dumb, so no loss there. He didn't show up because, and although I am not a Trump fan, Trump goes after Maduro and his regime, and he did, so Maduro wanted to avoid being ridiculed himself, and by a ridiculous man at that.

(12,022 posts)He greatly admired America. In fact, look at the first line of his "proclamation of Independence":
"All men are created equal; they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights; among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."
We blew him off. As usual, we sided with the wrong side.

(9,865 posts)...any more, in some profound way. It's been trivialized. Dangerous as hell, but trivial. They figure the best way to deal with it/him is to marginalize him, rather than appease or validate. Speaking of which--what ever happened to that visit to the Queen of England?
Doing better than our own emmy award organizers---with their Spicer normalization.

(54,369 posts)There is no way Putin or Xi wants their facial expression to be photographed while Trump is saying how he will annihilate North Korea, especially when there is just about zero chance he'll get a chance to fulfill that fantasy, even if he really wanted to.
