AFAIK, the Navy has not kept any of its ship-to-shore power gereration ships in operation. That seems a little short-sighted. Even one such ship would be a godsend right now.

(707 posts)Other ships are being serviced and reoutfiited they had to replenish after the first two hurricanes. US Navy will respond also remember that sequesteration hurt availability of non combat vessels.

One RWNJ remarked to HRC's tweet that they were already in PR, and "You'd know that if you were President."

(33,982 posts)Most of the ships that dock there aren't over 26 feet draft. Including the largest of the cruise ships.
They're opening a port with a 50 foot channel depth waterway, but it's still under construction, and all it takes is for a medium sized yacht to be sitting on the bottom, and you crunch the Comfort.
For its intended purpose, the Comfort and the Mercy are examples of not thinking through the design requirements. Each has a single helipad, no hangar. It's practically useless for this specific scenario.
The LHD Kearsarge is in place, and it can handle multiple rotor wing aircraft, and it has the large hovercraft landing ships, so it's moving a lot of aid in and out. Much more effective in this role. Basically a landing ship and helicopter version of a Carrier.
Maryland Task Force One is arriving in Puerto Rico as well. I don't think people understand the scale of this disaster, nor the scale of the relief effort required.
This shit is for people who get things done. Not the Executive. The Office of the current President deserves neither credit not criticism for any part of the response effort. These plans and these resources are put together years in advance. You can't do it ad hoc from the Resolute in the Oval Office. The President, any President, can do little more than make promises and phone calls, in this regard. President Obama put some of it together. Bush put some of it together. It's an evolutionary thing, and it's bigger than any one disaster and bigger than any one president.

(36,262 posts)Man, is that true. I had really hoped that some in the military had a defined mission for disaster relief that gave them the leeway to rush in and help without waiting for Twitler to notice there was a problem, but I have no experience with the military and don't know how free they are to act. I have seldom heard news more encouraging than that the pros have got this. A real President would have at least reassured the country that action was under way, instead of engaging in more useless poo-flinging on Twitter.
Thanks for all the info. I'm sure no one in the WH has a clue as to *any* of these details, except the generals. And the details are truly matters of life and death.

Trump wants on whites to die.
And they do vote. Millions of American citizens live there who vote absentee.

Could he still be THAT pissed off that the HAMILTON! cast protested asked Mike Pence to make sure people's rights weren't taken away?
