Happy 93rd Birthday, Pres. Jimmy Carter

Happy Birthday, Jimmy Carter! Former president turns 93 on Sunday

May I say, Sir.....you still look great!!

Plains — Jimmy Carter turns 93 on Sunday, and the peanut farmer who became president will mark it in his preferred fashion: By attending a piano concert in his honor at an Americus church on Saturday night, then teaching Sunday School at his own church here the following morning. In Atlanta, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum will lower admission to 93 cents on Sunday and have a birthday card visitors can sign.

But this teeny southwestern Georgia town got an early jump on things last weekend, as thousands of people turned the 21st Annual Plains Peanut Festival into an impromptu celebration of the most famous citizen’s big day.

“President Carter will be 93 just a few days from now,” said CPIC president Roger Van Sickle, pointing out that former President George H.W. Bush actually is several months older. “So what we look forward to is coming back to this group in 2024 to help President Carter and President Bush 41 celebrate their 100th birthdays!”

He and his bride have built a legacy far beyond anything they could have envisioned. I am still proud of the ballot I cast for him in 1976, my first. I know he was caught up in the politics going on when Reagan was elected and it is a shame he didn't get a crack at a second term.

But I guess the biggest lesson to take away from the Carters is that a single defeat need not stop you from doing great things to make the world a better place. They could have retreated to their farm, lived out their lives quietly and privately. But they chose not to do that. Their mission was to make the world better and kinder, safer for as many as they could reach. While not having the lofty position of the Presidency, they did have the impact of being a former President and First Lady. So they took that legacy, ran with it and succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. It is a great lesson for all of us. Keep pursuing your dreams for as long as you draw breath!

Happy Birthday, Mr. Carter and may you and Mrs. Carter enjoy many more!
