... * "It's a great trip. Your weather is second to none but every once in a while you get hit. And you really got hit" ...
* "You've thrown our budget a little out of whack. We've spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico" ...
* "General Kelly is a four star. You don't get any better than a four star" ...
The whole 13+ minutes is surreal ... Trump makes the whole thing about him -- using the various officials, military and otherwise, around him to reinforce the ideas that he is doing a great job. On display is someone wholly wrapped up in himself ...

He can do that between meetings where he's fixing up the middle east.

(9 posts)Omar Bradley's fifth star is an interesting story. Bradley was selected to become Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and was a 4 star general. Douglas MacArthur was still in Japan. He would have outranked his superior. Congress promoted Bradley so they would be of the same rank. There was talk of awarding Colin Powell the 5th star after the First Gulf War. Takes an Act of Congress so it didn't happen.

... It was a typically strange, disjointed appearance by the president, and it came just days after Trump spent much of the weekend picking fights with the mayor of San Juan and insisting that, against all evidence, the recovery effort had largely responded to Puerto Ricos needs. At Muñiz Air Force Base, Trump was eager to praise the work of federal agencies, including FEMA, the Air Force, the Navy, and the Coast Guard, amid a chorus of criticism that Washingtons response has been too slow and too small. But that praise led .. in strange directions.
"Every death is a horror, but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina, and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people that died, and you look at what happened here and what is your death count? Sixteen people, versus in the thousands," Trump said. "You can be very proud. Sixteen versus literally thousands of people."
That statement is .. in several ways. The idea that Maria was not a "real catastrophe" defies all evidence, and any discussion of the death toll is premature. While the official number remains at 16, where it has been for several days without update, officials have acknowledged it will end up much higher. The Center for Investigative Journalism reported Monday that "dozens" of people are dead, with bodies piling up in morgues, even as the official count has not kept pace. Trumps decision to use Hurricane Katrina as a benchmark also makes little sense and belittles the suffering in Puerto Rico. Katrina is both the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history since 1928 and a prime example of a mismanaged disaster. Trump also overstated the toll of Katrina, which was less than 2,000 ...

President Trump employed an unusual method of distributing supplies to hurricane survivors ...
Trump stood behind a table covered in supplies for the victims while a crowd gathered in front ...
He then handed some packages of rice out to the crowd, before picking up packaged rolls of paper towels and throwing them into the crowd as if they were basketballs.
People caught two of the rolls, while another fell to the ground ...

The People's President is down in Puerto Rico today, learning more about how it's an island surrounded by "Big Water," and that it's actually full of United States citizens. Allow the president to explain, and to tell a joke about how Puerto Ricans are ruining the Trump administration's budget with all their requests for "food" and "drinkable water" and "rescue equipment" ...
It was done when he paid Puerto Rico no mind for days as the territory slipped into humanitarian catastrophe, attacking black professional athletes and, when he finally did address the crisis, largely blaming the island's debts for its troubles. It was done when he then went to his golf course this past weekend, and then a golf tournament ...

It was a characteristically Trump performance: offbeat, impromptu, meandering and often highly suspect in its taste ...

(23,191 posts)He doesn't like what his 2, count them 2, 3 star generals are saying that the relief effort is totally inadequate so he invents Kelly being a 5 star general and tries to make it sound like that guy says they are doing great. It's just lies stacked on lies stacked on no heart or caring at all about anyone who's not rich and white. He's totally happy to let the people of PR and VI die en mass, and of course will continue to lie until the pictures come out then will invent another distraction so prevent these pictures from dominating the news and stupid news hacks will go along.
