ESPN suspends Jemele Hill over tweets

http://money.cnn.com/2017/10/09/media/jemele-hill-espn-suspended/index.html

ESPN has suspended host Jemele Hill for two weeks due to "a second violation of our social media guidelines," the network announced Monday afternoon.

Hill "previously acknowledged letting her colleagues and company down with an impulsive tweet," ESPN said in a statement. "In the aftermath, all employees were reminded of how individual tweets may reflect negatively on ESPN and that such actions would have consequences. Hence this decision."

On Sunday, Hill tweeted about Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones having said that any player who "disrespects the flag" will not play. Hill said that "Jerry Jones also has created a problem for his players, specifically the black ones. If they don't kneel, some will see them as sellouts."

She later said, "If you strongly reject what Jerry Jones said, the key is his advertisers. Don't place the burden squarely on the players."

Apparently ESPN's social media guidelines prohibit perceptive insight. Knock that off, Ms. Hill!

Look at the list of suspended Cowboys just since 2014. This includes Greg Hardy who they signed WHILE HE WAS ON SUSPENSION for domestic violence.

10. Should Not Have Been Suspended

She definitely should not have been suspended for those tweets. She did not even say anything bad about Jerry Jones. She just pointed out that the players are being put in a hard spot, which is true. Football is their job. It is how they make their money. If these guys are benched they might not get paid in that NFL contracts are not guaranteed. So, these guys now have to choose between getting a paycheck, or supporting a cause. In the second tweet she just told people to take the fight to Jerry Jones' advertisers and not put all the weight on the shoulders of the players.

Both of her tweets were tame and true. The players are now going to have to make a choice: football or an idea. One of the best ways to target behavior you do not like is to go after a person's, a company's, or a team's advertisers. If they display behavior you dislike, call their advertisers and say you will not support those products as long as they are associated with that group. If that group loses enough advertisers they will likely stop behaving in a way you dislike. That is why so many group call for boycotts of TV shows they do not like. If ratings are too low that show will not have advertisers and will likely get cancelled.
