Also, not all the local stations that broadcast NBC programming are NBC-owned and -operated. So NBC the network does not hold the licenses for most of the stations that broadcast NBC programming.

It's still an Orwellian sentiment, despite the ignorance it demonstrates.

Communications law practice in DC for over 35 years. During that time I've filed and defended license renewal applications and also have filed petitions to deny renewals and petitions to revoke licenses. It is a very high bar to get a license denied or revoked (the last case I worked on where licenses were revoked was the RKO General case in the early 1980s).

Also, while NBC does not need a license to be a network, it does need and have licenses for its owned and operated stations. And its conduct as a network can be raised as an issue in connection with it's licenses. Again, the bar is high, but as the RKO case demonstrated, a station owner's character and its candor in dealing with the FCC can be cited as grounds for revoking a license or denying a renewal.

When Fox News went to court over firing a reporter for refusing to lie on the air for them, and won because a judge (probably a Fox News fan) agreed with their argument that they were only an entertainment company and only gave their opinions on the news, plus they were a private company so the court could not dictate what they said.

Obama could have right there and then introduced some bill that would require any network that used the word "News" in their title, to have to be fact checked by a non-partisan group, much like factcheck.org or Snopes. And if they failed to pass this test over a certain period, or reach a certain acceptable level, their license to call themselves a "News" network would be revoked. Can you just imagine the furor this would cause?

In fact I'd like to see Trump try this too. Because I think he actually has convinced himself that everything Fox News, Brietbart, and probably Stormtrooper and the National Enquirer as well, says is true, and that the rest of the MSM is lying about him. Of course Fox and co. would never allow it because they'd be outed quite quickly.
