General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWho here knew anything about Harvey Weinstein before the last week?
Not Hollywood types. DUers.
I have been interrogating my memory and (knowing how pliable memory is) I had heard he was a general big shooter, I have little memory of the person.
I do not really follow that part of the world other than loathe it.
Am I an outlier? Did normal people know who he was?

(62,414 posts)tahat was about it.
I knew they had some good movies, but I couldn't tell you what they were.

(6,929 posts)The gossip sites were filled with reports of his behavior for years. I am not a Hollywood person.

(27,811 posts)I have nothing against the entertainment industry; in fact, I like it, but I've never followed the names of producers or even directors, with a very few exceptions. I barely know one studio from the next.

(63,221 posts)I was always shocked that Georgina Chapman was married to him. She is not your typical, run-of-the mill gold-digging bimbo like Melania. She comes from an upper middle-class English family and is quite successful and wealthy in her own right. Also, she is stunning. Even if she was looking for money, she could have done much better.

(3,847 posts)After so many years of men telling me to my face, we don't want women, I left.
We all knew about what an a-hole the Slug has always been. It was really brought home when Jennifer Lawerence won her Oscar. She said, "I don't know who Harvey had to kill to get me this, but thank you."
Everyone laughed in the audience, but there was an under current of discomfort and acknowledgement to the truth. We all knew that comment was true, he was a strong arm bastard that "campaigned" for his movies and actors.

(33,343 posts)He's a long-time Big Shot in Hollywood. Knew he was a Dem.
I had no clue about his Lothario status, didn't know he was married, but I knew he was an old-school mogul type.
I can't say I'm surprised. Power corrupts.

(6,568 posts)From Miramax to The Weinstein Corp. Used to be my favorite pair of producers. That's been shattered (although, Bob still seems to be ok).
But I went to school for film, and I've been an avid film buff since my early teens (around 1992-ish).

(18,402 posts)But that's because of a confluence of things: my husband was involved in film exhibition for many years, and so he had either met or knew a lot about various producers, directors, actors, etc. He first met Harvey and Bob in Buffalo (where they were in those days, promoting rock concerts as Harvey and Corky), and he thought Harvey was "kinda sleazy" back then.
Of course we saw the rise of the Miramax and subsequent Weinstein production companies, and knew about his aggressive--many said excessive--campaigns directed at getting his films Oscars. Bob was the one who kept the company afloat for a while with successful horror films, to offset Harvey's "quality" pictures.
At film festivals over the years, where the gossip was thick, my husband used to hear all the scuttlebutt from people about "hating" Harvey. But it was always about his thuggish personality and hardball tactics; he never heard the allegations of sexual abuse.

I don't understand how anyone who is even vaguely a movie buff would not know the name.

(20,187 posts)I knew about Rose McGowan's tweets with the hashtag "#whywomendon'treport". I figured out it was one of the Weinstein brothers when she tweeted:
"Because my ex sold our movie to my rapist for distribution #WhyWomenDontReport".
Boyfriend: Robert Rodriguez
Film: Grindhouse
Distributor: Dimension Films (part of the Weinstein Company)

I didn't know which brother it was or when it happened. I also remember a joke Seth McFarlane told, but I thought Harvey was just a lech. It's about 3:20 in this video.

(10,014 posts)'Normal' people who have any awareness of American movie culture know Weinstein was a producer of some of the biggest movies of the last 30 years. You're not an outlier - you're just not interested in knowing anything about something you loathe.

(12,344 posts)The stories about how he acted with women are so commonplace in Hollywood that they don't stand out that much. I am surprised he actually got caught, not that he did it. Maybe things will start to change now.

(26,602 posts)couldn't have named them), and if I'd been asked to name something they'd produced I could have come up with Marco Polo (on Netflix). But I'm accustomed to seeing the name associated with various movies/shows that I've enjoyed...

(630 posts)During the 90s, he gained a reputation for acquiring the rights to various hit or potential hit films from Asian territories only to sit on them (supposedly to prevent them from competing with his home-grown product) or only making them available in the US in cut-down versions dumbed down for American audiences.
For Jackie Chan fans, that meant hunting about for complete and unedited versions of his movies. He heavily delayed the release of the Jet Li film Hero, as well as cult favorite Shaolin Soccer (encouraging massive piracy in its wake).
