Somewhere on the way to his real estate/reality TV career he forgot his lessons in civics and American democracy from high school. Or maybe he always had an F in those subjects; being rich, he didnt and still doesnt think they apply to him. For that we are all paying dearly.
And the longer he stays in, offering more and more somewhat Stalinesque amendments to American democracy, the more autocratic erosion to this once wonderful system we will experience.

(43,182 posts)When one likes to make allusions to past despots and dictators, the most frequent and obvious place they go is with Hitler. He is, after all, the most prototypical tyrant on hand.
However, considering Trump, he might be closer in personality to Stalin than to Hitler.
Hitler was ideologically driven and--for whatever its worth--a rapt public speaker.
On the other hand, while Stalin commanded an audience, he wasn't the captivating, almost hypnotic speaker Hitler was. And Stalin wasn't so much about ideology (although he certainly used it for his own purposes) as it was for aggrandizement of self. He was obsessed about loyalty and would clamp down on anyone he viewed as a threat to his own survival or potentially disloyal.
To the extent Stalin was obsessed about punishing disloyalty--even against entire groups and ethnicities--he's probably closer in line with Trump than Hitler was.
It was less about a master race and more about personal worship and fealty with Stalin.
Of course, Trump also draws a lot in common with another WWII figure, Mussolini, in terms of his direct personality.
