A somewhat comprehensive analysis of the russian psyops. Please read. Thank you.

TL;DR
If you look at the russian psyops as a whole, if you look at the big picture, the point of it wasn't to install Trump as POTUS.
The point of it was to create chaos and domestic unrest and weaken any US government that would come into office.

I wish I could find that article again... Russia's online-psyops is based on the idea that Russia will get its fingers into every movement. Whatever it is, Russia is for it AND against it. This way, any movement on this topic will automatically be in some way controlled by Russia.

Examples:

- Russia created a fake Facebook-group for a "Black Lives Matter"-style movement.
https://thinkprogress.org/black-matters-us-site-90625b18f262/
The goal: To aggressively call out racism and to paint HRC as a racist.
No matter which side you're on: Russia is feeding your outrage.

- Or how about the Youtube-channel who tried to frame HRC as a racist and boasted that Trump CANNOT possibly be racist because he's a businessman.

No matter which side you're on: Russia is feeding your outrage.

- Russia created the fake pro-muslim group "United Muslims of America" AND the fake anti-muslim group "Heart of Texas".

https://www.democraticunderground.com/10029691543
The goal of the pro-Muslim group was to placate HRC as being friends with extremist Muslims and the anti-muslim group contained encouragements for protesters to kill somebody.
No matter which side you're on: Russia is feeding your outrage.

- Look at the way RT is reporting in the "taking a knee" issue:
On the one hand, RT is using it to attack the US as racist, on the other hand RT is playing it up as a question of patriotism.
No matter which side you're on: Russia is feeding your outrage.

- Before the election, Russia supported both Trump and Jill Stein with favorable reporting, even though Jill Stein was an absolute nobody. Why? Because they were opponents of Hillary Clinton. They were supported to spoil the presumed victory of HRC.
The reporting on Trump in russian media was so ridiculously one-sided, that Putin had to intervene after the election and command them to be less friendly on Trump from now on.

- Look at the way RT is reporting on Trump nowadays:
On the one hand, they are placating him as a mad warmonger and messenger of US-imperialism, on the other hand they are placating him as a respectable statesman, as a voice of diplomacy and reason.
No matter which side you're on: Russia is feeding your outrage.

- What about California seceding from the US Brexit-style: They guy behind this is now moving to? Russia.

No matter which side you're on: Russia is feeding your outrage.

Death by a million cuts.
Installing Trump was just a coincidence.
The real goal of the russian psyops is to destroy the US from within by supporting/impersonating any cause that could turn US-citizens against each other.

And the US is not alone in this: Whether it's the EU as a whole or Germany after Merkel's narrow re-election or Spain after Catalonia's referendum... On RT, Russia's enemies are hellholes of poverty and violence, just a spit away from full-blown civil-war and collapse.

In elementary school in the 1950's they used to teach kids how to recognize (communist) propaganda. Obviously it's harder now as propaganda has evolved.

Even into the late 60's there was a right wing faction known as the lunatic fringe. These were not conservatives. Not then anyway. Conservatives were people who sought to conserve things. That meant making good choices for society as a whole.
