Trump now says mystery cop claimed he could fix Chicago crime 'immediately'

Kim Janssen
Chicago Tribune

In President Donald Trump’s retelling, a mysterious Chicago police officer’s plan to solve the city’s crime problem keeps getting better.

On Wednesday, the president told Fox News host Sean Hannity that the unnamed Chicago motorcycle cop whom Trump claimed he met on the campaign trail said that “if they let us do our job we could stop [violent crime] immediately.”

That’s a quicker turnaround than Trump has claimed was possible when he previously mentioned the mystery cop in his references to Chicago crime, a favorite topic of his since he launched his run for office.

In August 2016, he told disgraced former Fox Host Bill O’Reilly that he believed the mystery cop when the officer told him he could solve Chicago’s crime problem “within a week” if he was in charge.

Then, in July, the president offered a slightly different version of the story — telling an audience of cops in Long Island, N.Y., that the officer, who he said was part of a motorcycle escort to the airport, credibly told him he could clean up Chicago in “two days” if he was in charge of the Police Department.

How is Trump going to “immediately solve Chicago’s crime problem” when Chicago has had a crime problem since they founded it and everyone accepts that crime is the way things will always be?

New York cut back on their crime problem, and the first thing they needed was a populace who wanted a crimeless metropolis bad enough to make it happen. In Chicago, crime is the national pastime. You can go on crime tours in Chicago. If you blew Chicago off the map this instant and raised a new city from the rubble, there would be crime before there was a waterworks.

I think his obsession with Chicago, as with the NFL, is a distraction. There are solvable problems like our crumbling bridges. He either doesn’t want to or isn’t able to fix those problems, so he does what he’s doing.

Not queen, not duke, not prince.
My regal robes of the forest, would be satin, not cotton, not chintz.
I'd command each thing, be it fish or fowl.
With a woof and a woof and a royal growl - woof.
As I'd click my heel, all the trees would kneel.
And the mountains bow and the bulls kowtow.
And the sparrow would take wing - If I - If I - were King!
Each rabbit would show respect to me. The chipmunks genuflect to me.
Though my tail would lash, I would show compash
For every underling!
If I - If I - were King!
Just King!
Monarch of all I survey -- Mo--na-a-a--a-arch Of all I survey!

For there to be crime, there needs to be people. White collar crime, domestic crime, victimless crime, violent crime, socially or organizationally designated (read - biblical or ethical) crime - there's a law concerning almost everything people do.
So if you want to get rid of crime, get rid of people.

Also, everyone who is not in charge always thinks that they can get things cleaned up if only they were put in charge. I have said it. A lot of us have said it when we are frustrated with the way things are going.

The reality is that crime is not solely a law enforcement problems and will NEVER, EVER be solved by law enforcement. There is crime in the most repressive regimes in the world. You solve crime with a comprehensive and complex interaction between community improvement, social services, economic support, and the aforementioned law enforcement. Now unless this "cop" had a comprehensive plan that balances out civil rights, civil liberties, and public safety, then it is just talking shit. Even if the cop did have the best plan, it would not take effect in a week or immediately. There may be some good progress in a week, or even immediate positive consequences, but again, it is just talking shit to say that you can solve crime in ..... amount of time.

Bottom line is that Trump is a lying moron.

Wouldn't be surprised if some cop did actually say this to him.

"If they would just let us do our job!!" is not an uncommon mindset, and it generally means "I don't agree with the the boss's strategy, and/or rules and/or expectations that are set upon me".

It's really concerning when you hear it from a cop, because the "rules" that the cop is disagreeing with are usually referred to as "the US Constitution", specifically "The Bill Of Rights".

It's basically "Sure, I could clean up Chicago lickety split if they would just let me lock up people based solely on my own gut feeling/suspicions/racism......"

And we do know that Trump has an AMAZING talent for inspiring people to be more open about expressing this kind of warped mentality.

So yeah, would not be surprised if some cop said this at all.

It was a time of constant gang warfare in Chicago. The era of prohibition. Think Elliot Ness.

So, according to my dad, a visitor to Chicago from the USSR was asked what he would do. He said he would line up all the gang members he could find and kill every 10th person every 24 hours until the gang wars stopped.

Somehow I think Trump heard this story and wants to substitute blacks, Latinos, and immigrants for gang members....and wants cop to bear the ignominy of such a plan.

Ya think??
