(15,805 posts)Since the Roman Empire, they have been bred to be livestock guardians, and they are completely dedicated to that task. It doesn't surprise by that a Pyrs would stay with his charges in the face of danger, they protect their flocks and will face down bears and wolves. I always knew my milk goats, the sheep, pigs and horses were protected with my Prys on duty.
I don't agree with the decision to abandon the dog to dying in the fire. If it were my decision, the choice was clear, my dogs are a beloved part of the family and I would have taken them both with me. I would have been heartbroken at losing the goats, and as much as I liked my goats, they are livestock and not the same a our cherished family companions. While they liked to be scratched and fed, and they're cute and funny, goats lack the ability to return the affection and develop the bonds that we share with our dogs.
Hi to a fellow Pyr lover! I have two. They're not much in the way of livestock guarding tho'.

(15,805 posts)I know that inquisitive, tilted head expression so well! My girl is Powder, she's 5, and a true couch potato. All my livestock is long gone, but Powder has two kittehs that she lets torment her without complaint. She makes us all feel safe.
