General Kelly's son was married. Wouldn't President Obama first offer condolences to the widow?

I suppose we'll eventually find out which family member(s) President Obama contacted, and how, and when.

No matter what we learn, though, it was despicable of Trump to use Gen. Kelly's son's death this way.

Kinda depends upon the level of White House interaction on the part of the General. Pretty high rank though, four star and all. But it could have easily generated a call, although Sec Def and Chairman JCS might have covered that.

Kelly's son's wife would have been the one to receive a call of condolence. While President Obama may have reached out to General Kelly for a Washington event, the son's own immediate family would have had priority.

NBC a little while ago:

A (Trump) White House official told NBC News on Tuesday that Obama did not call Kelly after the death of his son. But a person familiar with the breakfast for Gold Star Families at the White House on May 30, 2011, told NBC News that Kelly and his wife attended the private event and were seated at first lady Michelle Obama’s table.

A former senior Obama administration official disputed Trump's initial claim on Monday that Obama didn't call Gold Star families, calling it "wrong."

"President Obama engaged families of the fallen and wounded warriors throughout his presidency through calls, letters, visits to Section 60 at Arlington, visits to Walter Reed, visits to Dover, and regular meetings with Gold Star Families at the White House and across the country," the ex-official told NBC.

Don't know where Kelly was when his son died, but it's possible that immediate condolences were delayed due to geography and events. One thing, Kelly playing hell these days trying to keep Rump from blowing up the planet and not be fired in the process. I hope he will not feel obliged to offend rump in any way on this.

President Obama would have personally called the widow and not the father of the slain solider. Here is some more on this https://www.rawstory.com/2017/10/john-kelly-and-his-wife-sat-with-michelle-obama-at-gold-star-family-gathering-after-sons-death/

Second Lt. Robert Kelly was killed at age 29 while leading a platoon in Afghanistan in November 2010, and his father delivered a speech four days later about military sacrifices and the troops’ growing isolation from society.

His father has largely avoided speaking publicly about his family’s loss since then, and asked the Marine Corps officer who introduced him ahead of that impassioned speech not to mention his son.

“We are only one of 5,500 American families who have suffered the loss of a child in this war,” Kelly told the Washington Post six years ago. “The death of my boy simply cannot be made to seem any more tragic than the others.”
