Mississippi school named after Confederate President Jefferson Davis to be renamed after Obama

ARIS FOLLEY, AOL.COM

An elementary school in Jackson, Mississippi, will be renamed after President Barack Obama instead of its original namesake, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, leaders announced Tuesday.

Janelle Jefferson, president of the Parent Teacher Association at Davis Magnet IB, said the decision was made earlier this month after school stakeholders voted to rename the school Barack Obama Magnet IB, The Clarion Ledger reported.

“Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him,” Janelle Jefferson told the outlet, which also noted that 98 percent of the students who attended the school this year are black.

According to the local paper, the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees approved a policy that permitted the PTA and Davis community with the control to rename the school. Mississippi Today reported that staff, parents and students were able to submit name ideas to the PTA and later voted to name the school after the former president on Oct. 5.

Janelle Jefferson said the community wanted to rename the school “to reflect a person who fully represents ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves.”

I am so proud of my hometown for taking this step! It is not erasing our history. It is replacing the school name with someone the students can be proud of. Davis has his place in history. That cannot be changed. But he was wrong and should not be honored for his beliefs and what he fought for. We are finally, as a nation, making a positive step to accept our history, even with flaws and mistakes, but not honor those who turned against the United States. They left our Union to fight against the Union. It makes no sense to act like that never happened and bestow a place of honor on the people who led the betrayal.

So the mistake will be corrected and a more suitable name will grace this elementary school. The students who go there can look with pride at the person their school honors.

And a great way to accept the sad past while moving forward to a better future.

As for Trump: The walls are closing in. Just wait until Putin tires of him. We here in the U.S. already have.

We still have so much "growing up" to do, as a culture.

Sadly at best it will take many more generations yet...

That is going to frost Trump's flakes. And he can't sign a "presidential" order to rescind the decision either. He'll probably have his "nice" white supremacist buddies blow the school up, but only after all the white children have been removed. It wouldn't be beneath him. Nothing is beneath Trump. He is the definitive bottom of the barrel.
