(14,861 posts)Imaginary white women who stayed home where they belonged, made babies and devoted their lives lives to serving their masters, uh, husbands. Perfect white women who never had a bad day, never talked back, never put a foot wrong. These perfect women never existed in real life, and creeps like Kelly never respected real women of any color.

(10,180 posts)by their husband's at night and if they went to their Parish Priest, he told the women that they could not divorce, that they just had to take it. This is where Kelly was raised too. And according to Lawrence, racism was baked in also. Racism and misogyny were "normal."
The women being beaten? This is white, middle class women we're talking about. The only jobs we were "allowed" to have back in the 60's was Nurse, Teacher (not College) and store clerk. Job listings in the newspaper the year I graduated, 1966, were still listed as "Jobs for men" and "Jobs for women." That continued into the 70's. No birth control without your husband's permission. Couldn't buy anything, car, etc., without a male cosigner, on and on.
No way out. Women were sacred, my ass. And Black women? Ha!
