I think there is a good possibility this is going to happen given the situations he seems to enjoy escalating.
Note, the question was updated due to a suggestion for more accuracy. See #14.

(47,036 posts)My father was flying missions in and out of Da Nang for four years during the VN war.
He flew cargo planes, carried in troop supplies to Da Nang, carried out dead bodies.

(25,309 posts)My dad flew B-29s in Korea. I have no idea how long he was deployed.
He also flew cargo in VN. He flew DeHavilland Caribous. He was sent for a year in 1966. I was 10.

(47,036 posts)That was unaccompanied of course. He was gone about two years. He never talked about what he did in Korea, or what he flew. But my mother says he came back different, changed. And he never referred to his time there.
Then during the VN war, we were stationed in the Far East, the whole family, and we were there for four years 1962-1966 and the men flew missions to VN from Far East bases. It was so strange to me as a child, I remember him wearing unusual flight suits to fly combat, no name or rank, and he carried a gun on a belt on his waist. I was taken aback, especially when he told me what the gun was for, and why there was no identifying information on his flight suit.
He flew in WWII as well, in a bucket of an airplane, doing the Burma Hump.

Pull former pilots out of retirement is a ominous sign, indeed. Something is in the works.

Since, everything he touches, spirals unimaginably out of control, nothing would surprise me. He said he liked war during the campaign. We know, he can't let go of a fight, even when it's in his best interest.

(67,108 posts)it's in his best interest." I'm not a panicky type, but I really do wonder where we're headed with this guy. What really pisses me off, all of the brilliant and capable people in the US, and we have a damn fool like Trump leading the country. If an ass like Trump can be elected, it really makes me wonder what's next.

(53,032 posts)And the military doesnt support it. Nor is there a need. Trump poses serious dangers to this country, and I fail to see the need to imagine more. Additionally, we have seen one of these polls for every administration , including Obamas.
The country knows full well that the white middle and upper-middle class will not tolerate a draft, that they are perfectly comfortable leaving those responsibilities to the poor, lower-middle class and people of color. If we had concern for equality, we would have required national service for all Americans, as many nations across the planet do. And certainly at a time when commitment to deepening inequality and restoring the unfettered privilege of the white male middle and upper-middle class pervades national politics across the political spectrum, there is no way politicians would asked for an equitable system of national service.

(67,108 posts)class and people of color that get drafted. Also, with all of the inequality and lack of opportunities, sometimes people go into the military because that is really the only option to try to get a job. For some it works out really well, and others not. This is not a fair country, I get so fed up with all the BS about equality and equal opportunities that many politicians love to hawk.

(32,083 posts)reinstating the draft? The President cannot instate a military draft. That requires an act of Congress.

(5,523 posts)That was before the lottery. A few years ago I looked up the lottery results and found out I would have never been drafted for the years of the lottery. Oh well. I served with a bunch of good guys and met my future wife and saw some of the world.

(5,523 posts)The lifers convinced me that we need everyone, who are able, to serve and get out if and when they can. If we're going to butt in everywhere, everyone should have skin in the game.
RKP5637
(67,108 posts)Most Americans have no skin in the game, it's over there, out of sight. Hence, many don't pay attention to what is going on, because it will be someone else. If done correctly, I've always thought a couple of years of service to the country could be a good thing, "if" done correctly. It could be all sorts of things, not necessarily active military duty.

(4,516 posts)Mandatory military service for all men after HS. Charged with treason if they don't report. I'm not the only one who thinks this I have heard R-wing military guys discuss it. They see it as a purge. Pack all the liberals, sissy boys, thugs, minorities and other undesirables off to the military. The only ones who will return will be "real men" who deserve to be called Americans. Yet, they refuse to award this term to those who have already served and returned.

(11,144 posts)Politically it would serve as a check on the war hawks and encourage a lot of parents and draft age kids to take their franchise more seriously. Hopefully they'd think long and hard before electing a doofus like the one we now have.
The lottery came near the end Vietnam. My number was 9. I can laugh about that now.

He is already granting himself the power to call up all military retirees no limits.
A draft is not a whole lot different than that huh?
