The National Anthem and Major League Baseball

Back in September, Bruce Maxwell, catcher for the Oakland As, took a knee during the Anthem, but it wasn't really all that big a deal. Lots and lots of pro baseball players are not even U.S. citizens, so reverence and allegiance to the U.S. flag and National Anthem wouldn't really be appropriate for them in the first place.

So, as the World Series begins, it's unlikely that Anthem arguments are going to be part of that final set of games this season. Some may try to make it so, but players who are not citizens have no, and no reason to hold, allegiance to the flag or to our nation's anthem. I hope someone points that out early in the World Series.

MLB was salivating at the prospect of a series between teams in the two biggest media markets in the country. Add to that the storied rivalry between the Yankees and Dodgers and, well, ratings gold.

Ergo, not so many viewers to get outraged at anyone taking a knee. Football is our national religion, not baseball.
