Steinle shooting prosecutor: defendant knew what he was doing

SAN FRANCISCO — The undocumented immigrant <Garcia Zarate> accused of shooting and killing Pleasanton native Kate Steinle was aiming toward her and knew what he was doing, a prosecutor <Diana Garcia> argued in her opening statement on Monday morning ...

Garcia spent time explaining how the firearm worked, and discussing how it got into .. Zarate’s hands. It was issued to a federal Bureau of Land Management agent who was on his way driving with his family from Southern California to Montana, and was stolen from his car ... Zarate told police he found it on the pier ...

<Diana Garcia> acknowledged that the shooting was a ricochet skip shot, hitting the pier about 15 feet from the defendant and then ricocheting almost 80 feet farther to hit Steinle. That’s a key piece of evidence the defense points to as proof that .. Zarate wasn’t trying to hit her. But Garcia said that firearms experts will testify that he could have been aiming toward her while raising the gun and pulled the trigger before the weapon was high enough ...

The case became a national political talking point, with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and other conservatives using it as an argument for tougher border security and against “sanctuary cities.” Garcia Zarate, a Mexican citizen, was released from a San Francisco jail two and a half months before the shooting ... He had previously been deported five times ...

Welcome to the exciting world of rightwing talking points: "Kate Steinle would still be alive if only ..." But anyone can play "if only": for example, there's a nice long list of people killed in mass shootings since Kate Steinle died -- and they'd still be alive if only we didn't have so many guns floating around

Any other person except an illegal immigrant finds
a gun and accidentally shoots and kills someone, and
the right-wing would blow it off as an avoidable tragedy
that better training and responsible gun ownership
could have prevented. Point out that Mr. Zarate has
mental health issues and these same idiots would defend
his right to legal gun ownership, if he wasn't an illegal immigrant.
