General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMark Cuban is thinking of running for President in 2020....as a Republican.
I don't know if this has been discussed yet. I haven't seen it.
This would be big news. I think this is a person who could beat Trump (or Pence, if Trump is impeached as he should be) for the candidacy. And would be a formidable opponent.

Does the Dem Party have an up and comer in the wings, to run in 2020? Charismatic, likable, popular, smart, respectful & dignified as a President should be, etc.? (Hey, that sounds like Obama!)

(1,896 posts)The last time they tried running one of those was Romney in 2012, and he lost. Still, the "support the President we have" mechanisms are strong in American politics due to the "winner take all" model, and it's going to take nearly as much for Trump to lose a primary in 2020 as it will for him to win a general.

(37,648 posts)He's actually philanthropic, Hispanic, socially centrist or even liberal (gay rights & such, I think). But about the money, he fits in with the Republicans. And he wouldn't be a nut job like Trump.
But running for national office is a horse of different color from anything these billionaires have done before. We've seen them fail. They're so used to being on top of the world & accomplishing so much money-wise, that they think everything will be like that, and underestimate the difficulty of national politics.

(1,896 posts)And until he releases taxes to prove me wrong I refuse to consider him so.
But Cuban would not be a terrible candidate. I'm not sure how good an actual President he'd be, but I've seen worse candidates.

(37,648 posts)He's also not the type to say this just for the press/attention.
He's very smart, very into issues, very likable, thinks fast on his feet, is a good age, and is used to speaking publicly and fielding questions. But can he give a good speech? Are his views contradictory or has he changed them? We all know how things trip up the newbie national politicians (and the not so newbie).

My fear is that he may be too liberal for Republicans, but hey it's certainly worth a short!

(25,299 posts)I don't think it will be an issue...I don't think they have a "love of Russia" the way an ethnic Russian does.
My family is from Turkey, but I'm from a Christian minority along with many Greeks. There is no love loss there.

(12,631 posts)I did look him up and I see he's another businessman/media darling. I guess because we're doing so well with the current one.

(37,648 posts)Four billionaires/millionaires who watch people pitch new products or businesses, but need investors. These four rich people then will either make an offer, or not, like I'll give you $200,000 for a 15% of the business. Or whatever.
Yes, I think the billionaires who have a national presence and have been so successful, get to thinking they're omnipotent and don't understand how different politics is.
But Cuban is different from Trump in that he is interested & vocal on some issues, as well as philanthropic. He's the one who sent one of his planes to Puerto Rico loaded with supplies, when our govt wouldn't do it.

(37,324 posts)The GOP will be looking for somebody foaming-at-the-mouth crazed. Even Sarah Palin wouldn't win the primary now.
