The death rate per 1,000 people per year in Puerto Rico is 8.5.

https://www.indexmundi.com/g/g.aspx?c=rq&v=26

With a population of 3.4 million people, that means that in an ordinary year 28,900 people in Puerto Rico die.

That works out to 2,408 deaths per month in Puerto Rico.

Figures such as the one reported above are meaningless absent a comparison to the expected 2408 dead people in PR in the last month if a hurricane had not hit.

I can't find a statistic for the cremation rate in PR. Cremation rates in the US vary from a high of 63% in Washington and a low of 3.2% in Tennesee. The median cremation rate in the US is 26%.

So, if PR is close to the median cremation rate, then you would ordinarily expect 553 cremations per month. But given that cremation rates vary wildly, you'd need a figure for PR specifically to determine whether this is an unusually large figure.

IS NOT being done... THIS IS NOT NORMAL PROCEDURE.

SOME of the deaths from Katrina were likewise not attributed, but by the time the medical examiner decided to deviate from normal public health post disaster procedures, an enormous death toll had already been documented.

Eventually, there will be an accounting of excess mortality which is not explained by migration since, unlike Katrina, it's not as if people can just go off to another state without being accounted for.

My question is simply what conclusion can be drawn from this number without a meaningful reference?

How many cremations does PR have in a normal month?

So if the figure is 911 then the Hurricane must have breathed new life into about 1500 people.
