Hector Hugh Munro, better known by the pen name Saki... was a British writer whose witty, mischievous, and sometimes macabre stories satirize Edwardian society and culture.

(7,809 posts)Tobermory was a cat who was taught how to talk. As you may expect, Tobermory didn't give a flying fuck about human sensibilities or who he embarrassed or hurt.
The Chronicles of Clovis is good, too.
They are quite funny, in a macabre way.
Edited to add: Sorry, I forgot to mention that they are no longer under copyright. Google "stories by Saki" and you will find lots to download for free.

(22,896 posts)I've run across cats with that name but I never knew what its origin was-- now I know. (Rather embarrassing for someone who majored in English to admit!)
Thanks for the recommendations!

(7,809 posts)In my 20s, I went through a period where I read a bunch of late 19th and early 20th century literature like Arthur Conan Doyle, some Thomas Hardy, and H H Monro. I guess it made me feel like an intellectual or something.
Another good one to start with is The Open Window. Enjoy!

(19,477 posts)He was a man of his times. He wrote a short story a few years before WWI broke out in which he predicted the war, England losing, and being ruled by a German Empire which in turn was ruled by conniving Jews. At the time, many in England believed that the Jews did control Germany and were behind German belligerence.

(54,378 posts)Sredni Vashtar is often referred to as Saki`s/Munro's "darkest tale."
Maybe that's why it has always been my favorite

(54,378 posts)It IS a classic, but Saki would never have written anything like that.
