There were still a lot of rules for women, of course. Anyone could see that. The rules became more rigid the more power you wanted. You couldnt smile too little, or too much. Your voice could not be too high, lest you seem shrill. It couldnt be too husky lest you seem masculine. You could not be overweight, or, for that matter, pretty in a way that was too obvious. Your hair well, your hair and makeup would need to be done each day, or people would say you looked sick, and that would take hours. You needed to never appear angry, or, in the least, inconvenienced.
We were so sure that we could play by the rules and win.
I watched as millions of women excitedly gathered in secret groups to support Hillary Clintons candidacy. There they talked about what an exciting moment in history this was. They did not venture out because their husbands might not like their vote, or Bernie voters might yell at them, or someone at their work might not like it. We saw at the time, I think, no contradiction in being posed on the edge of ultimate victory for womankind and also secreting ourselves away to make ourselves completely unobjectionable. We were always supposed to be unobjectionable.
On November 9, we woke up, and Donald Trump had been elected.
It became clear that you can be the most qualified woman and still lose to the least qualified man.
That was like a spell being broken. All across the land, women woke up and realized we were never going to get where we wanted to go by playing by the rules. Even if you walked the tightrope of acceptable feminine behavior perfectly, even if you managed to sidestep every trap laid for women, you would still never to get to the top. The bar for men was so low they could slither right over it.
......................
I think of all those young male Trump voters who claimed they wanted to vote for Trump because they wanted a revolution. They got one. Its coming from women.
If you listen carefully, you can almost hear millions of women screaming. It sounds fine. It sounds like the world changing.
Im hopeful again.

(3,014 posts)She was arguably the most qualified candidate ever. However the Bros, the Trumpanzees, and even women who think they need a man to lead them couldn't see to vote for her because she's a woman.

(14,167 posts)I will get my chance to throw out our Rethug governor here in Illinois and I want to sweep out all of the Rethugs who dared to elect such an ignorant, entitled, sexual predator.
I can't wait. And I know many people like myself who are waiting for the chance to show the racist, sexist, self-hating morons what they're really afraid of.
Mark my words, 2018 will be the Year of the Woman.

(8,000 posts)I remember going to bed election night sick at heart and waking up the next morning mad as hell. I am still as angry as I've ever been about anything in my life. At first, I was ready to give up. I wanted no part of people who were so stupid as to vote against Hillary. Like others here, I will never get over it, but I will fight back. Hillary leads the way. If you're knocked down, get back up. Keep working for what we know is right.

(66,328 posts)over the election results, one year later. She was never Hillary's biggest fan to start with, but her admiration and respect for HRC grew and grew throughout the campaign, concurrent with her increasing loathing and revulsion for Trump.
The day after, she wasn't able to go in to work, she was so shattered. I went in, only to have to beg off before I had even seen my first patient. I knew I wasn't going to be able to make it through the day. I went home to Mrs. Aristus, and we spent the rest of that day consoling each other and trying to make sense of it all.
We voted in our local elections here in Washington (nothing of national consequence) on Tuesday, and she is still adamant that she will never vote for another Republican in her life. She keeps hoping that some obscure technicality will put HRC in her rightful place in the White House. But she is counting on engagement and voting to help right the awful wrong our country has suffered.
I call Mrs. Aristus my tigress; she makes a formidable enemy. Well, Republicans, you've got yourselves an enemy you should be afraid of. Grow some eyes in the back of your empty heads. Your day is coming. Mrs. Aristus will see to that...

(113,279 posts). . . .
If not being able to do precisely what they want precisely when they want is uncomfortable for them, well, theyve been making us uncomfortable for generations. Weve learned to make ourselves small and inoffensive so as not to upset them. Let them at least learn not to grab us without consent. Let them learn that were not to be raped. Let them learn that there are consequences to hurting women, because all this time, though weve been quiet, weve been people too.
Some men dont like that. I think I can speak for a great many women when I say, we dont care if you like it. We've put up with a thousand rules imposed on women since the beginning of time.
Our centuries of polite silence may be coming to an end.

(36,048 posts)Women didn't just "wake up." Women were never asleep.
They knew about the war against women.
They just believed men would play by their own rules.
They didn't expect them to be the cheating, lying jackals they were.
And their current media attackers are no better.
To drag out this public abuse is the height of pathological fascism.
