(60,536 posts)In 1980, Bannon was deployed to the Persian Gulf to assist with Operation Eagle Claw during the Iran hostage crisis. The failure of the mission marked a turning point in his political world-view from largely apolitical to strongly Reaganite, which was further reinforced by the September 11 attacks.[48][49] Bannon has stated that, "I wasnt political until I got into the service and saw how badly Jimmy Carter f---ed things up. I became a huge Reagan admirer. Still am. But what turned me against the whole establishment was coming back from running companies in Asia in 2008 and seeing that Bush had f---ed up as badly as Carter. The whole country was a disaster."[50]
Upon his departure he was ranked as a lieutenant (O-3).[1][a]

(2,357 posts)"Captain" in the Navy is a much higher rank than "Captain" in the Army. Thus, it is misleading at best (and factually wrong at worst) to call Bannon a Navy "Captain".

(60,536 posts)A Captain in the Navy is equivalent to a Colonel (aka a "full bird" in the Army. Somebody screwed up in the reporting of his rank, so what?

(2,357 posts)Especially if it makes a jerk like Bannon look like some sort of high-ranking boat-driver.

Carter was a true Navy hero and one of the first Nuclear power Officers in the Navy.
You know what you call an O3 at the Pentagon? "Coffee Bitch"
You couldn't swing a stick in the Pentagon without hitting some O3 carrying a Captains luggage.
Fuck Bannon. He's used his brief stint as a junior officer as a fucking crutch long enough.
I want to see his FITREPS! Promotion rate to O4 is about 95%. I'd like to see why ole Steve never achieved it.
I'm betting some commanding officer saw him for what he was and stomped on his dick in a fitness report

(46,705 posts)Simply because conservative white males believe they get a teflon suit if they can claim they are retired officers in the military. This is sick and depraved and the military should investigate the overreaches in the private sector by these old guys who are taking our communities into hostile territory in order to accommodate their quid pro quos. It's unbecoming an officer. Strip them of their rank.

Calling Bannon a Navy Captain when he was only a Lieutenant gives him credibility he neither deserves or earned.
Those of us that have served all know someone like Bannon. The kind of person who made you want to take a shower if you just passed him in a passageway.
I've said it before. He is already an embarrassment to the United States Navy and all who have served. We don't need to enable the myth of Steve Bannon... Navy hero.
Especially since I and all who have served know exactly how insignificant an O3 in the Navy is... and how significant the role of an O6 actually is.
As a Lieutenant, Bannon barely earned a qualification to steer a liberty boat. A Captain has earned the qualification to take a Nuclear powered Aircraft Carrier into battle.

(18,648 posts)so should he be called former President?
It may be a larger rank difference but the principle is the same.

Lock 'em all up together and they can exchange war stories about how they saved Catalina Island from the Viet Cong.
