Allison Ikley-Freeman, the Democrat nominee for the November 14 special election for Oklahoma Senate District 37, is married to another woman.
Ikley-Freeman was the only Democrat to file. She faces former Jenks City Councilor Brian OHara, who won the September 12 GOP primary in a field of seven candidates. That seat is open due to the impending retirement of Sen. Dan Newberry, R-Tulsa.
According to OSCN.com, Allison Michelle Freeman, 25, got a marriage license with another woman, Dawn Michelle Ikley, 40, on March 31, 2017. According to the license, they were married at American Marriage Ministries on April 2, 2017.
According to her campaign website, Allison Ikley-Freeman is a wife and working mother of 3 beautiful children. Her familys home church is Centenary United Methodist near downtown. She and her family make their home in West Tulsa and reside in Oklahoma Senate District 37.
As a first generation college graduate, Allison has earned a bachelors degree in Psychology, a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health and works as a therapist at a Tulsa based, non-profit, community mental-health agency. Through the Tulsa Achieves program, she embraced volunteerism as a way of life; earning the Presidents Volunteer Service award. According to the resolution statement by the Tulsa County Democratic Party on the party website (adopted on March 25), the group supports: GBTQIA Protection: We support the full protection for all LGBTQIA citizens in every sector of life including education, labor, private and public life, and equal rights be granted under the law. We also support the resolution to enact a protected status for LBTQIA citizens.
Bathroom Restriction Bills: We oppose all bathroom restriction bills that are intended to discriminate against transgender individuals.
Marriage Equality: We support marriage equality and oppose any Act or Law that is designed to allow for discrimination of same-gender married couples.
In contrast, the Oklahoma Republican Party Platform states: We believe that marriage between one man and one woman is a covenant relationship, instituted by God, and is fundamental to our very existence and survival as a nation. Because we oppose efforts to redefine marriage, we strongly support a U.S. Constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman. It also states that any candidate for office who wants to receive financial support from the GOP must affirm traditional marriage and pro-life values.
OHara has been married to his wife Karen for 34 years. He has been endorsed by the National Right to Life Committee; the Tulsa Fraternal Order of Police; Tulsa Firefighters 176; OK2A, U.S. Rep. Jim Bridenstine, R-Oklahoma; State Sen. Joe Newhouse, R-Tulsa; Sen. Dan Newberry; and the Tulsa Beacon.
